The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School is delighted to offer two postdoctoral fellowships in the field of contemporary Chinese public policy.

Each fellowship will run for a period of up to two years. The recipient will receive an annual stipend of $50,000, health insurance, and workspace. Some research/travel funds may also be available.

The Roy and Lila Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation advances excellence and innovation in governance and public policy through research, education, and public discussion. The Ford Foundation is a founding donor of the Center. Three major programs support our mission: the Program on Democratic Governance, the Innovations in Government Program; and the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia.

In order to be eligible knowledge of Chinese is required, as well as the ability to work with original sources.

Degree Level: Fellowships are available to pursue postdoctoral programme.

Available Subject: Fellowships are awarded in the field of contemporary Chinese public policy.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of the start of the fellowship in a relevant discipline in the social sciences or history. Preference will be given to those working in the areas of domestic politics, political economy, business-government relations, state-society relations, and social development of China, with a focus on public policy challenges.

  • Residence in the Cambridge area and participation in the activities of the Center are required. It is expected that the successful applicant will give at least one research presentation or public talk during the fellowship period. Foreign nationals must be eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.

  • Knowledge of Chinese is required, as well as the ability to work with original sources.

  • Those who are chosen to receive fellowships must have completed ALL requirements for the PhD degree (including the dissertation defence) by June 1, 2017. Preference will be given to applicants with no previous postdoctoral fellowships.


Nationality: The US as well as well foreign students are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of the start of the fellowship in a relevant discipline in the social sciences or history.

English language Requirements: Knowledge of Chinese is required, as well as the ability to work with original sources.

Email the completed form, research proposal, writing samples and a current CV by January 6, 2017, to Ash_Fellowships-at-hks.harvard.edu with “Postdoctoral Fellowships in China Public Policy” in the SUBJECT line. Recommendation letters should be emailed directly to the Ash Center from the referees.
