The Middle East and North Africa Centre at the University of Sussex is inviting applications for three PhD scholarships (fully funded for three years) available from September 2017, made possible by the generous support of the Pears Foundation.

The scholarships are tenable for 3 years, with the possibility of extension for one further year. The scholarship covers UK/EU or International fees and provides a stipend that matches that provided for UK doctoral students by the UK Research Council.

Applications are invited for Pears Foundation PhD Scholarships at the Middle East and North Africa Centre at University of Sussex in UK. UK/EU or International students are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

The goal is to deliver teaching and learning programmes that are informed by current research are attractive to students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and which deliver skills for life.

The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution near Brighton, in the south of England. Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:

The doctoral project proposed must fall into one of the Centre’s main areas of study: Middle Eastern, Israeli and North African Studies. There are no restrictions as to time period or subject area.

Students must be accepted into a PhD course in the humanities or social sciences, which include the following schools:

  • English

  • History, Art History and Philosophy

  • Media, Film and Music

  • Business, Management and Economics

  • Education and Social Work

  • Global Studies

  • Institute of Development Studies

  • Law, Politics and Sociology


The successful candidate will have an outstanding academic background, including the methodological training and/or language skills necessary to start their research project.

Applicants must be able to commence their PhD in September 2017.

 Nationality: UK/EU or International students are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

English language Requirements: All teaching at Sussex is in the English language and applicants must therefore be sufficiently fluent in English to be able to benefit from their education. If applicant’s first language is not English, or they have not recently completed a degree in an English-speaking country, they will normally be expected to have passed an appropriate test in English, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), successfully pass applicants Pre-sessional English course, or have a qualification that confirms their English level. If applicant do not have evidence of appropriate English language ability at the point when applicants apply, this will normally form part of the conditions of any offer.
IELTS- There are three different levels of English required for postgraduate study at Sussex, depending on their chosen course. In terms of IELTS, the standard requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each section. However, for some degrees there is a higher-level requirement of IELTS 7.0 overall, with not less than 6.5 in each section and, for courses in mathematics and physics, a lower requirement of IELTS 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in each section. The detail of which English language level is required is listed for each course at Postgraduate study, given in terms of IELTS scores. Please check carefully to ensure they know the level of English required for their chosen degree.
