2014 Belgium UCL Fellowships for International Students


Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics is offering fellowships for scholars from outside Belgium, who hold a doctorate or possess equivalent qualifications and are active in the field of economic or social ethics. Scholars with an active interest in the main research themes of the Hoover Chair’s members are particularly welcome. Honorary fellows will be full members of the Hoover Chair for the duration of their stay. Fellows will not receive any stipend, but will be entitled to a contribution to their housing costs of up to EUR 300 per month for duration of up to four months. The application deadline is 28 February 2014.

Study Subject (s): Fellowships are awarded in Economic and Social Ethics. Scholars with an active interest in the main research themes of the Hoover Chair’s members are particularly welcome. These themes include theories of social justice, theories of democracy, the future of the welfare state, the potential and limits of corporate social responsibility, intergenerational justice, linguistic justice, workplace democracy, transparency in collective decision making, the stigmatization of social categories, critical political economy, etc.

Eligibility: Candidates must be scholars from outside Belgium, who hold a doctorate or possess equivalent qualifications and are active in the field of economic or social ethics. At least some rudiments of French and an active knowledge of either English or French are required. Scholars with an active interest in the main research themes of the Hoover Chair’s members are particularly welcome. These themes include theories of social justice, theories of democracy, the future of the welfare state, the potential and limits of corporate social responsibility, intergenerational justice, linguistic justice, workplace democracy, transparency in collective decision making, the stigmatization of social categories, critical political economy, etc. Many of them are illustrated in the essays contained in the recent collection Arguing about Justice.

Scholarship Description: Founded in 1991, the Hoover Chair’s mission is to promote ethical reflection in teaching and research in the Faculty of Economic, Social and Political Sciences of the Catholic University of Louvain, and help feed a clear and informed debate on ethical issues facing our society in the areas of the disciplines of the Faculty. Since its inception, the activity of the Hoover Chair took shape Midis of ethics. Are successively added to the Hoover Fellowship in Economic and Social Ethics, the course and the degree in Economic and Social Ethics, the intimate Tuesdays Hoover Chair of the Ethical Forum of the University Foundation, Bernheim project “Social Responsibility” and the Lovanium Seminar in Ethics and Public Policy.

Duration of award(s): Fellowships are awarded for up to four months.

What does it cover? Honorary fellows will be full members of the Hoover Chair for the duration of their stay. Fellows will not receive any stipend, but will be entitled to a contribution to their housing costs of up to EUR 300 per month for duration of up to four months. They will be provided with office space, internet connection, free access to various other services, some secretarial assistance, and some help in finding accommodation. They will be welcome to take an active part in the Hoover Chair’s activities and will have access to the University’s seminars, lecture courses and libraries.

- your current research interests, and in particular what you intend working on during your stay;
- your linguistic abilities;
- your preferences as to the length and timing of your stay;
- the names, institutions, positions and e-mail addresses of at least two referees to whom a reference letter could be asked if we find it necessary.
