University of British Colombia Master Card Foundation Scholarships (Undergraduate and Post Graduate)




The University of British Columbia is pleased to partner with The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to provide comprehensive scholarships to students from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Program provides access to education for academically talented, yet economically marginalized young people. Scholars in the Program have a demonstrated commitment to giving back to their communities and develop the leadership needed to contribute to social and economic transformation across the continent.


Undergraduate Scholarship Instructions:


The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC for undergraduate students is open to first-time applicants who are residents and citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country. This program targets academically qualified, yet economically disadvantaged, young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent.


Nominees need to apply online to the University of British Columbia AND submit the Undergraduate MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program application.Nominees must complete the online application for academic admission to UBC by December 10, 2015 and meet the UBC English Language Admission Requirement by February 15, 2016.



UNDERGRADUATE ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA


To be eligible for consideration as an undergraduate for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, the nominee must:




  • be a citizen of and residing in a Sub-Saharan African country;

  • present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show they lack financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in their home country or elsewhere;

  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and show leadership qualities or potential;

  • demonstrate an interest in and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities outside the classroom, in the school and/or community;

  • be graduating/recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school;

  • be applying for their first undergraduate degree in one of the following Faculties at UBC’s Vancouver campus:

    • Faculty of Arts

    • Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering)

    • Faculty of Forestry (Bachelor of Science in Forestry)

    • Faculty of Land & Food Systems (including Global Resource Systems; Food, Nutrition & Health; Applied Biology [Applied Animal Biology, Applied Plant & Soil Sciences or Food & the Environment])

    • Sauder School of Business (Bachelor of Commerce)



  • be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian Study Permit;

  • commit to returning to Africa immediately after graduation from UBC in order to apply their training and skills to the betterment of others.


APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS


In order to apply for the Undergraduate MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia, you must be nominated. Nominations will be accepted from secondary schools and recognized international development agencies and their affiliates, or registered local or international charitable and not-for-profit organizations. Each school or organization may nominate a maximum of three students.  Note that you will need to apply online to the University of British Columbia AND also submit the Undergraduate MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program application.

When students are confirmed for nomination, their  high school or recognized non-profit organization must use the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program nomination package.

GRADUATE ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA


To be eligible for consideration for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Masters’ Degree Program at UBC, the applicant must:





  • have completed a Bachelor’s degree;

  • be a citizen of and have lived a significant part of their life in a Sub-Saharan African country;

  • present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show lack of financial means from family or other sources to pursue graduate education in their home country or elsewhere;

  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and show leadership qualities or potential;

  • demonstrate an interest in and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities in their current profession, university or community;

  • be applying for a Master’s degree in one of the following Faculties and programs at UBC’s Vancouver campus;

    • Sauder School of Business

      • Full-Time MBA Programs



    • Faculty of Forestry

      • Master of Science (MSc)

      • Master of Applied Science (MASc)

      • Master of Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM)

      • Master of International Forestry (MIF)



    • Faculty of Land and Food Systems

      • Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)

      • Master of Food Science (MFS)

      • Master of Land and Water Systems (MLWS)





  • be a person who requires a Canadian study permit to study in Canada;

  • commit to returning to Africa immediately after graduation from UBC in order to apply their training and skills to the betterment of others.


Please note that Convention refugees and students intending to become landed immigrants to Canada are not eligible for consideration for this award.



APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS


Prospective students from Sub-Saharan Africa who qualify under the MCF Scholarship eligibility criteria must complete an application package to seek admission into one of the above Faculties.





MCF Scholars Eligibility

  • In addition to applying to the Faculty, prospective students will also be required to submit a MasterCard Foundation Graduate Scholars Program eligibility application form.


Selection of Scholars




  • A university-wide selection coordinating committee will award the scholarships to the top scholars based on the nominations from the faculties and a comprehensive review of the MCF scholarship application. Successful applicants will be notified by April 2015.


Please note that Admissibility Submissions are due: - Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Land & Food Systems: December 1, 2014 – Sauder School of Business: December 15, 2014 Completed Application Packages are due: - Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Land & Food Systems: January 6, 2015 – Sauder School of Business: January 30, 2015   These dates may vary from those posted on faculty websites. Please note that if you are applying for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, you must submit all your documents by the dates requested above.  NOTE: APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN IN SEPTEMBER 2015 FOR THE 2016-17 YEAR. PLEASE CHECK BACK ON THE WEBSITE IN SEPTEMBER.
