Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships at University of Toronto


The University of Toronto is awarding postdoctoral fellowships at the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS). These scholarships are open to citizens of all country and from all universities. The Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to provide outstanding recent doctoral students advanced training in their field of study. These fellowships are not disciplined specific, but rather can be held in any department or research unit across the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. Since the first classics, chemistry, philosophy and physics classes were taught at King’s College — U of T’s precursor — in 1843, the Faculty of Arts & Science has evolved into one of the most comprehensive and diverse academic divisions in North America and established itself as the heart of one of the world’s leading universities.


Applicants must have completed their PhD requirements before the start date of an Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowship.




  • Fellowships are available for pursuing the postdoctoral programme.

  • These fellowships are not disciplined specific, but rather can be held in any department or research unit across the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto.

  • These fellowships pay a stipend of $45,000 per year for a maximum of two years.

Eligibility Criteria:




  • As these fellowships are designed for relatively recent graduates, applicants must have completed all requirements for their doctorate degree no earlier than May 1, 2015.

  • Applicants cannot currently hold a tenure-track or continuing faculty position at a college or university.

  • Applicants may be citizens of any country, and from any university. Please note that successful international candidates must be able to meet all Canadian immigration requirements.

  • The application deadline is December 2, 2016, with start dates no earlier than May 1, 2017 and no later than December 1, 2017. Decisions will be made in mid-February 2017, and successful applications will have 6 weeks from the time the decisions are announced to accept or decline the fellowship.

  • Fellowships are only tenable within FAS at the University of Toronto. Proposed supervisor(s) must have a tenure-track or tenured appointment in FAS (i.e., fully appointed at the St. George campus) at the University of Toronto.

  • Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents must have completed their PhD requirements no later than six months after their start-date of an Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowship. International applicants must have completed their PhD requirements before the start date of an Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowship. Note that completion does not mean convocation but rather the completion of all the requirements necessary for the PhD.


Eligible Nationalities: Citizens of any country can apply for these postdoctoral fellowships.

English Language Requirement


If student’s first language is English: They are not required to provide proof of English facility. Instead, they must include Grade 12 English ENG4U/EAE4U (or an equivalent course) among the courses student offer for admission.


If student’s first Language is French: How many years have they studied in an English language school system in a Canadian School?




  • If they have successfully completed four or more years of full-time study achieving satisfactory a ademic progress in a Canadian school, theyare not required to provide proof of English facility. Instead, they must include Grade 12 English ENG4U/EAE4U (or an equivalent course) among the courses they offer for admission. Also, they must provide transcripts showing their studies completed in Canada.

  • If they have less than four years of full-time study in a Canadian school, they must present proof of English facility.


If student’s first language is other than English or French: How many years have they studied in an English language school system in a country where the dominant language is English?




  • If they have successfully completed four years or more in a country where the dominant language is English, they are not required to provide proof of English facility. Instead, they must include Grade 12 English ENG4U/EAE4U (or an equivalent course) among the courses they offer for admission. Also, they must provide transcripts showing their studies.

  • If they have less than four years in a country where the dominant language is English, they must present proof of English facility.


Application Procedure:




  • Submit CV and a completed Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowship application form to the office of the Vice-Dean Research & Infrastructure. The form includes a one-page research proposal where student should describe their proposed research project and highlight the importance and impact of the research, and how this research fits into their academic goals. Please note that reference list or bibliography are not necessary for the proposal.

  • Arrange for proposed supervisor(s) to send the Arts & Science Postdoctoral Supervisor form to the office of the Vice-Dean Research & Infrastructure. Note that only application that have a corresponding
