10 Tips to Secure an International Scholarship

After you’ve spent so much time and effort preparing your application, it can be incredibly disappointing to learn that you didn’t get the scholarship you were after. Whether it was merit-based or an international scholarship you applied for, these tips will help you ensure that your application has all the hallmarks of a winning one. These 10 tips to secure an international scholarship will help get your foot in the door at your dream school and will set you up for success once you arrive on campus!

1) Set your goals early

When applying for a scholarship abroad, you may find yourself overwhelmed with all of your options. But don’t panic: By setting goals early on, you can more easily stay organized and on task. Before you begin your application process, think about what you hope to gain from a scholarship and how it will affect your life beyond school. These dreams will help propel you forward as you apply and get accepted! Here are some things to consider: Will receiving a scholarship allow me to travel? To study abroad?

2) Identify Scholarships

There are many scholarships available, but you need to know how and where to look. Some countries will even provide a list of their current student exchanges, so you should visit your country’s foreign affairs department or national institute for international education. These organizations typically have websites that explain what criteria they’re looking for in exchange students, as well as lists of previous scholarships and participating partners.

3) Know how much you can afford

Research is a huge part of getting any scholarship, and that’s particularly true when you’re looking for international scholarships. Before starting your search, make sure you know how much money you can actually afford to pay for tuition (and other expenses) at your top schools. It may take some careful budgeting, but it’s worth knowing if one school costs twice as much as another before applying.

4) Know the rules of application

Make sure you understand every rule and requirement of any scholarship you’re applying for. Some may require a higher GPA, or language proficiency in another language, or multiple letters of recommendation. Others might have essay requirements that are different from what you’re used to, which will require extra research on your part. You want to spend your time preparing a winning application—not worrying about why you weren’t chosen. It is easy to be disqualified if you don’t know all that's required!

5) Do research on the country

If you’re applying for a scholarship that is based in a different country, learn about its people, its language, and any history it has with your home country. You can use social media sites like Facebook or Google (or even ask your friends) to find out more about it. You can also look at magazines from that country as well. The more you know about them and their culture will help make writing essays easier.

6) Write a winning scholarship essay

If you are applying for scholarships, it is important that you write a great essay. You will be competing with thousands of other applicants so it is important that your scholarship essay stands out as unique and inspirational. If you want to maximize your chances of winning a scholarship, make sure that your scholarship essay has these 10 characteristics. Good luck!

7) Give something back as a scholar

You’ve already accomplished a lot academically, so it might feel silly to brag. However, because scholarships often require that you submit a personal statement or participate in an interview, many students find they have a lot of opportunities to show off their professional and personal successes through these materials. Even if you don’t see yourself as particularly outgoing or accomplished, remember that your scholarship applications are one of your only chances at standing out from other applicants. Now is when you can go for it!

8) Follow up with every possible contact

It’s hard for American students to gain access to international scholarships, but with some creativity and persistence, it can be done. To get your foot in the door, start by following up with every single contact you have who might be able to introduce you to people or organizations that could help. People are generally more than happy—and honored—to help if they can.

9) Start applying early (1.5–2 years before the deadline)

The earlier you start applying, the better your chances of securing scholarship money. If you think getting a scholarship will be a breeze, think again. You need to apply through multiple channels and hone your application so it’s as strong as possible.

10) Consider alternatives to traditional scholarships

While international students have more scholarship opportunities than ever before, securing one can still be a challenge. That’s why it helps to approach your search with a well-honed plan that will help you navigate scholarships in your field, whether they are institutional or private, and even if they are based in Australia or overseas. When used in combination with an Australian university education, international scholarships can potentially provide enough funding for you to study at home without having to take out loans or lines of credit.
