The Darden School of Business, affiliated to the University of Virginiawas established in the year 1954 as a graduate business school. Darden School of Business is located at Charlottesville in Virginia and got its name from Colgate Whitehead Darden Junior, who is a former congressman, president of the University of Virginia and the governor of Virginia. Darden School of Business is also popular for its Batten Institute and the research activities undertaken therein. Batten Institute deals with applied research and knowledge transfer programs. The Batten Institute got its name due to the $60 million donation from University of Virginia alumnus Frank Batten, the founder of the Weather Channel. The academic programs on offer by the Darden School of Business include the following – full time two years Master of Business Administration (MBA), MBA for executive program, Global MBA for executives program, Executive education programs, joint degrees in MBA and the PhD degree program. Darden’s two year MBA program is heavily based on case study method and case study analysis as used in Harvard Business School. Infact the school uses only the case study method for teaching its students. Some of the major concentration for MBA includes – Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and strategy, Leadership and OB etc. Darden School of Business is also ranked on top by the Financial Times especially for its Executive Education Program which includes both custom build and open programs for working professionals. The twenty two months MBA for executives program of Darden School of Business was launched in 2006 and students receive the same MBA degree as full time students. The Global MBA for executives (GEMBA) is for experienced managers who aim for international career growth while working full time. This is a 21-month program from Darden School. PhD degree from Darden School can be taken in the following management areas – Ethics, LO, Entrepreneurship and strategy. Darden School of Business also offers dual degree programs – MBA-JD with the UV School of Law, MBA-MD with UV School of Medicine, MBA-MPH with Department of Public Health Sciences, UV, MBA-MA in East Asian Studies and MBA-MA in Government or Foreign Affairs with UV Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, MBA-ME with UV School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, MBA-MSN with UV School of Nursing and MBA-PhD degree administered by the director of the Doctoral Program.
