Cardiff University is inviting applications for Sasakawa Postgraduate Research Studentships in Japanese studies for 2015 academic year. This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Up to 3 studentship is available and consists of £10,000 p.a. for one year. Candidates must have a good first degree or are predicted to obtain one. This studentship is funded by The Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. The application deadline is 27-February-2015.

Eligibility:  -Residency: This studentship is open to students of any nationality.
-Academic criteria: Candidates must have a good first degree (a good 2:1 or above) or are predicted to obtain one.
-For candidates interested in undertaking a PhD programme a Masters is desirable, but we will consider candidates without a Masters who can demonstrate the ability to engage in substantial independent research – e.g. by completing an undergraduate dissertation with a mark (or predicted mark) of a high 2:1 or above.
-Part-time programmes are not eligible.
-Candidate Criteria:
-The research proposal must focus on Japan or the Japanese language for those considering the MA in Translation Studies.
-It is important that you and your referees comment on your skill in Japanese in the areas of reading, composition and speaking.
-For those applying for the PhD programme, priority will be given to applicants who have completed at least one year postgraduate study at a UK institution of higher education.
-Candidates must have submitted an application via the Online Application Service by the Studentship application deadline.

  • Up to 3 nominations available for the applicants.Cardiff School of Modern Languages is pleased to invite applications for the Sasakawa Postgraduate Studentship in Japanese studies, made possible through the generosity of The Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.  The School can nominate up to three students for postgraduate studentships worth £10,000 each. This studentship is initially for one year only, but may be renewable subject to satisfactory progress in subsequent years, beginning in September of the 2015/16 academic year. Please note, however, that you will be required to reapply for the studentship each year, and that the GBSF will consider these applications on their merits. The GBSF cannot make a recurrent four year commitment to any one PhD candidate from year one.

  • The duration of studentship is one year.

  • The School can nominate up to three students for postgraduate studentships worth £10,000 each.

  • Interviews may be held during the week commencing Monday 9th March 2015.

  • There are three stages to the application process for this award.
    -Initially applicants must contact Dr Christopher Hood to discuss their area of interest and to check their eligibility.
    -Once it has been confirmed that they are eligible to apply for the award, they will need to submit an application for postgraduate study via Cardiff University’s Online Application Service.
    -Please specify one of the following two programmes of study with a start-date of October 2015:
    -MA Translation Studies OR
    -MPhil / PhD in School of Modern Languages
    -Applications must be submitted via Cardiff University’s Online Application Service. In the funding section, please select “I will be applying for a scholarship / grant” and specify that you are applying for advertised funding from The Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
    -Alongside your completed online application form, you will need to upload the following supporting documentation:
    -A personal statement. It is important that you take time to complete this section in full and explain why you are applying for a place on the degree programme and how it relates to your academic and career development.
    -A research proposal of 1500 – 2000 words (if relevant).
    -Certified copies of your degree certificates or an official transcript of your academic record to date.
    -Certified copies of your English language certificate (if relevant).
    -Two academic references.
