The Juris Doctor–Master of Industrial Relations (JD/MIR) program at Queen’s University offers a unique blend of professional legal education and advanced study in labour and employment relations. This combined program is designed for students who seek to deepen their understanding of legal frameworks while exploring the dynamics of workplace governance and human resources. Admission is competitive, requiring concurrent applications to both the JD and MIR programs.
The combined curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive education in law and industrial relations. It integrates core legal training with specialized graduate coursework in employment relations and labour policy.
Students engage in graduate-level coursework that delves into employment relations, labour policy, and other relevant fields, fulfilling the academic requirements set by the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.
Participants in the program may have the opportunity to enroll in an International Law Program at Bader College during the spring term of their first year, potentially allowing for an accelerated three-year completion pathway.
Upon graduation, students will navigate the licensing process and articling requirements necessary for legal practice, with guidance from the Queen’s Career Development Office.
Graduates of the JD/MIR program are well-equipped for various career paths in law, human resources, and organizational governance. With a solid foundation in both legal principles and industrial relations, graduates can pursue roles in legal practice, labour relations, policy development, and consulting. The program also prepares students for further academic pursuits or specialized roles in the public and private sectors.
