Overview
The Integrated Arts (iArts) program at McMaster University is a dynamic and practice-led course designed for those passionate about creative expression. This four-year program seamlessly merges studio-based art making with critical theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary project work. Students will cultivate a professional portfolio while mastering the skills needed to conceptualize, produce, and present innovative artistic work.
What you'll study
The curriculum is structured into two main stages:
Year/Stage 1: Foundations
- Studio Practice I: Focus on core techniques, experimentation, and documentation of artistic processes.
- Visual & Cultural Studies: Examination of art history and contemporary cultural contexts.
- Creative Research Methods: Development of ideation skills, referencing techniques, and research-to-practice workflows.
- Interdisciplinary Studio Lab: Engagement in cross-medium projects and collaborative art-making.
- Critique & Professional Practice: Involvement in feedback cycles, portfolio planning, and enhancement of presentation skills.
Year/Stage 2: Development & Capstone
- Studio Practice II: Advanced exploration and development of a coherent body of work.
- Media, Performance & Spatial Thinking: Investigation of various presentation formats (module content may vary).
- Electives: Tailor your education by choosing courses based on your interests, such as curatorial practice, digital making, typography, or sound/installation.
- Capstone Project / Portfolio Review: Completion of a final project accompanied by a written reflection and public presentation.
Entry requirements
- Academic background: Completion of secondary education or an equivalent qualification is required.
- Portfolio: A portfolio showcasing 8–15 works that demonstrate your range and creative process is highly recommended. Include a brief statement outlining your artistic interests and approach.
- English language proficiency: Proof of English language skills may be necessary, typically demonstrated by an IELTS score or equivalent.
- Application documents: Include a completed application form, portfolio, academic transcripts, a copy of your passport or ID, and any additional materials requested by the university.
