About this programme

Overview

The Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) Technology and Manufacturing course at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), in collaboration with NIBRT, is designed to equip graduates with the essential skills for technical, quality, manufacturing, and regulatory roles in cell and vector-based therapies. Over a duration of 36 months, students will gain in-depth practical knowledge of ATMP manufacturing processes, quality systems, and regulatory expectations throughout the product lifecycle.

What you'll study

The programme encompasses core modules that cover the complete ATMP manufacturing and quality lifecycle. Students will engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes:

  • Nucleic Acid Therapies
  • Viral and Non-Viral Vector Production Systems
  • Delivery Systems and Tissue Engineering Products
  • ATMP Quality Systems and Regulatory Affairs
  • Operations Excellence and Risk Management
  • Research Methods (Biopharma)

Learning activities may consist of applied case studies, industry-aligned problem-solving, and research-focused assessments. Depending on the academic year's structure, a capstone or project component may also be included.

Entry requirements

Applicants should possess a minimum of a 2.2 Honours Level 8 degree in a Science or Engineering discipline related to the life sciences. Alternative entry routes are available for candidates with different honours degrees and relevant experience in the ATMP sector, typically around five years in a GMP environment. Recognition of prior accredited learning in line with ATU procedures may also be considered.

English language proficiency is required, with minimum scores typically as follows:

  • IELTS: 6.0 (overall)

Required documents generally include academic transcripts, degree certificates, a CV, proof of English proficiency (if applicable), and any supporting documents for prior learning or industry experience.

Career prospects

Graduates of this programme will be well-prepared for a variety of career paths in the rapidly evolving field of advanced therapy medicinal products. They may find opportunities in technical roles, quality assurance, manufacturing operations, and regulatory affairs. Moreover, graduates may also be eligible to apply for post-study work permissions in Ireland, subject to meeting the relevant immigration criteria at the time of application.

Key points to consider

  • Post-study work permissions are typically time-limited and granted only after programme completion.
  • Students must hold appropriate permissions to study during the programme and demonstrate successful completion.
