Creative Cities Fellowship at the Stanford Arts Institute


Applications are invited for Creative Cities Fellowship at the Stanford Arts Institute for the academic year 2017-2018. There are no citizenship requirements for these fellowships; non-U.S. nationals are welcome to apply.


The Stanford Arts Institute, under the leadership of Peggy Phelan, the Denning Family Director of SAI and Professor of English and Theater and Performance Studies, offers interdisciplinary arts curricula and research programs, drawing on the wide-ranging intellectual resources of Stanford University.




  • Fellowships are available to pursue research.

  • Fellowships are awarded to those who are interested in candidates who can reach across disciplines (such as economics, geography, public policy, urban design) as well as artistic media. 2017-18 Fellowship Themes: “Creative Cities: The Role of Art in Reimagining Cities”.


Scholarship Award: Fellows will be awarded a stipend of $60,000 plus benefits.

Eligibility Criteria: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:


Fellowships are for one full academic year, and require the fellow to be in residence at Stanford during autumn, winter, and Spring Quarters (mid-September 2017 through mid-June 2018). Candidates will normally have an MFA or interdisciplinary PhD in the arts. Independent artists and scholars must demonstrate artistic or scholarly achievement equivalent to a relevant terminal degree. Fellows will be expected to teach one undergraduate course and contribute to University-wide working groups, seminars, and public discussions. Fellows will also have the opportunity to present their work in events open to the public.


Eligible Nationalities: There are no citizenship requirements for these fellowships; non-U.S. nationals are welcome to apply.

  • Cover letter describing the goals and achievements of your work to date (not to exceed three pages)

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Written work sample (not to exceed forty pages)

  • Fellowship Proposal detailing the research that the fellow would undertake while at Stanford, including a course description for an undergraduate seminar (five page limit). Research projects may include a creative practice component.

  • Three confidential letters of recommendation
