Denmark : PhD Scholarship in Veterinary Epidemiology

Section for Epidemiology at the Veterinary Institute presently employs 13 staff members, (one professor, four senior researchers, one researcher, three post docs and four PhD students). We are presently made up of four nationalities, and our working language is English. Our section is rapidly growing. Our research is focussed on simulation spread models of infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance. The Vector Group in the section is also responsible for the active surveillance of vectors and tick borne diseases, and therefore operates a small laboratory. The Vector Group is partner in EDENext, EMIDA-VICE, TickTools and VectorNet. Our working environment is enthusiastic, creative, friendly and super informal.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your job is to focus on developing spatial distribution models for insect vectors in Denmark and Europe and spatial models for tick borne diseases in Denmark. Both zoonotic and veterinary diseases are targeted. The methods will be focussed on spatial statistical models based on environmental parameters (not biological R0 models) and disease registers. Your two project aims are:

1. to produce national quantitative spatial models of tick borne diseases for decision makers (both public sector and agriculture) based on environmental parameters and remote sensing data
2. to produce both national and European spatial abundance models of insect vectors (mosquitoes and Culicoides) for further use in the Vector Groups risk assessments.

You will work closely with a parallel PhD project in dynamic biological modelling of insect borne diseases and with international partners.
The work will focus on developing and programming novel spatial disease and vector distribution models in GIS, R and specialised software (e.g. random forest algorithms). Some field work may be required. We are looking for candidates with GIS knowledge, programming skills, statistical modelling experience, knowledge of quantitative epidemiology/vector biology/veterinary or human medicine, IT skills, good English and good communication skills. The project will start in autumn 2014.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
