Scholarship Description:

UNNC's PhD programs require students to conduct research for three years and then have a one-year period where they can work on their thesis. For full-time PhD students, the maximum timeframe to submit their thesis is four years from their initial registration.


PhD students are supervised jointly by academics from UNNC, CNITECH, CAS, and UNUK.


Upon completing their PhD, students will receive a degree from the University of Nottingham without any indication of where the degree was obtained. The degree is accredited by both the Chinese Ministry of Education and the UK Quality Assurance Agency.




  1. University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC): UNNC is a branch campus of the University of Nottingham in the UK, located in Ningbo, China. It was established in 2004 and is the first Sino-foreign university to be established in China. UNNC offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various disciplines, including business, engineering, and humanities.



  2. Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS): CAS is a national research institution in China that operates under the State Council of China. It was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Beijing. CAS is comprised of various research institutions and universities throughout China, including the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology (which partners with UNNC for PhD supervision).



  3. China Ningbo International Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship Center (CNITECH): CNITECH is a technology transfer and entrepreneurship center located in Ningbo, China. It was established in 2014 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the region by connecting research institutions, enterprises, and investors.




  4. University of Nottingham UK (UNUK): UNUK is a research-intensive university located in Nottingham, UK. It was founded in 1881 and is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the UK. UNUK has a strong reputation for research in various fields, including science, engineering, and humanities. It partners with UNNC for joint PhD supervision.

Doctoral Training Partnership Scholarships at UNNC and CNITECH, CAS 2023, UK. is available to undertake PhD level programs at University of Nottingham.

Scholarship Benefits:

The available PhD scholarship covers

  • Tuition Fee
  • Monthly stipend (RMB3,500)
  • Accommodation at CNITECH for PhD candidate only (accommodation type is based on availability)
  • All above items are covered for up to 36 months based on satisfactory progression
  • All regulations set out in the UNNC PhD Scholarship Policy apply

In addition to the above scholarship, successful candidates also have the opportunity to carry out teaching (after the completion of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) training) or research assistant duties at UNNC since second year of their PhD programmes.

Eligible Nationalities:

This scholarship is available to international students. 

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants considering to apply for PhD Scholarship must have met the entry requirements of a PhD programme first. More details can be found on the 'entry requirements' page of the website.

Applicants must have a master degree with minimum average score of 65% and degree classification Merit or above from a British university. Applicants also should hold a bachelor degree at upper second class or above level. Applicants from institutions where different score system is used must have achieved an equivalent level of performance to the above.

Faculty of Science and Engineering also considers bachelor degree only holders with first class honours from a British university, or the equivalent from other institutions.

Applicants must meet the required English language proficiency for the relevant subject area. IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in all elements) or its equivalent is required for Faculty of Science and Engineering (FoSE) scholarship applicants.
