Applications are invited for Durham Doctoral Studentships programme for the year 2016. International students across all of the faculty’s departments and schools can apply for a Durham Doctoral Studentship.The aim of university is to promote the highest standards of individual behavior and personal accountability, and value social responsibility as a University and in our external partnerships.Durham University is distinctive – a residential Collegiate university with long traditions and modern values. Degree Level: Studentships are available to pursue doctoral degree programme.



Subject Offered: Studentship is awarded within the Faculty of Social Sciences & Health. Home/EU students in fields not support by the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre can also be considered for these awards. These fields include Biological Anthropology, Archaeology, Physical Geography, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Sociology. Please note that all applications from Home/EU students in the fields of Anthropology (Social, Medicinal and Development), Business & Management, Education, Finance & Economics, Education, Human Geography, Government & International Affairs, Social Policy and Social Work will be considered for studentships via the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre. Additionally, international candidates in Finance & Economics will be considered for ESRC awards, which are fully funded.

Eligibility: University is looking for candidates with the following requirements:




  • A first or 2:1 undergraduate degree, or have relevant comparable experience;

  • An outstanding academic pedigree and research potential, such as through the publication of journal articles and other publications; and

  • Be planning to conduct a high-quality research project.

  • In addition, candidates will usually hold or be completing a Masters degree in their area of proposed study or related discipline.

  • Applications are considered according to their academic merit. Factors such as financial status and nationality are not taken into account.



Eligible Nationalities: International students across all of the Faculty’s Departments and Schools can apply for a Durham Doctoral Studentship.



College Admission Requirement



Entrance Requirements: The standard minimum entry requirement to study a postgraduate programme at Durham University is normally achievement of an upper second class UK honours degree (2:1) or equivalent qualification and two satisfactory academic references.



English language Requirements: The University accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency (CPE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as preferred English Language proficiency tests. All qualifications must normally be taken within two years of the start of the academic programme (except where an extension applies, please see footnote below for details[1]) to meet the academic requirements of the University.



Preferred Tests:
a. IELTS: 6.5 (no component under 6.0)
b. TOEFL iBT (internet based test): 92 (no component under 23)
c. Cambridge Proficiency (CPE): Grade C
d. Cambridge Advanced (CAE): Grade A
e. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English at Grade C or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]
f. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language at Grade B or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]
g. GCSE English Language at grade C or above
h. Pearson Test of English (overall score 62 (with no score less than 56 in each component))



Supporting Material: In addition to completing an online application form, they will also need to provide the following documentation to their prospective department or school:




  • Current CV;

  • A research proposal, which is no longer than 2,000 words in length (excluding bibliography);

  • Two references; and

  • Transcripts of their previous degree(s).

  • If they have already submitted online application form and not added that they want to be considered for an award, please contact prospective Department/School to inform them that you wish to be considered for a Durham Doctoral Studentship.



Scholarship Benefit: The Faculty’s Durham Doctoral Studentships are tenable for three (3) years and provide award-holders with the following package of financial support:




  • A tax-free maintenance grant set at the UK Research Council’s national rate (currently £14,057 – the exact sum is announced annually by RCUK);

  • Full payment of tuition fees

  • Part-time award-holders are funded for six (6) years and receive a maintenance grant and research expenses allowance at 50% of the full-time rate.
