Introduction

The Master’s program in Biochemistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University is an international program for German, European, and International students, which is taught entirely in English. It aims at providing a cutting-edge education by combining advanced studies of Biochemistry with corresponding studies in related fields of Chemistry and/or Biology.

Admission Requirements

 Bachelor in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related topic.
- Bachelor curriculum should include practical courses in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Molecular
  Biology/Genetics, Cell Biology
- Bachelors in Biotechnology/ Engineering or Pharmacy will only be considered if transcripts show
  sufficient theoretical and practical skills in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology/Genetics/Cell Biology
- if you have not finished your Bachelor at the time of application you can apply with a current transcript of records,
  showing individual grades for at least 72 % of the required credit points (130 ECTS out of 180 ECTS for German
  applicants).
- excellent command of the English language. We do not require proof of English proficiency, however, you need
  to understand, speak, read and write English at a high level to master the curriculum.

Courses Units

Students will earn 45 ECTS points from the mandatory modules P1 - P5.
Students will get 30 additional ECTS points from the mandatory Master thesis work (P6).
To earn the remaining 45 ECTS points from compulsory elective modules students have two options:

Option 1: Choose one main topic from Biology or Chemistry (30 ECTS points) and one extension topic (15 ECTS points).

Students can choose:

  • Cell Biology or Microbiology as the main topic from Biology or
  • Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or Theoretical Chemistry as the main topic from Chemistry

Students may not choose an extension topic identical to the chosen main topic.

Option 2: Choose three extension topics (each 15 ECTS points) from the list.
