The Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom) is an exciting new degree that will enable you to combine your passion for arts and business into one degree.

Today's workplaces demand a different kind of graduate. The ability to think critically, solve problems and work as a team could prove advantageous in your future career. Studying for a multidisciplinary degree demonstrates adaptability and resourcefulness – skills that many employers are seeking.

The BACom will give you both a creative and business background to work in arts and business professions, or related areas, such as consumer behavior, ethics, international relations, leadership, and communication.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission in Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom) at University of Otago for all applicants (Domestic or International) are:

  • program specific academic requirment set by University of Otago.
  • English Language OR any other language requirments as set by University of Otago as pre-requiste for admission in Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom).

Courses Units

The normal structure of the program for the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom) is set out below.

  • Every program requires papers worth at least 480 points (normally 27 18-point papers would be taken, making a total of 486 points).
  • Must include the required papers BSNS 111–115.
  • Must include at least 216 points for papers from Arts and Music Schedule C and 216 points for papers from Commerce Schedule C.
  • Must include two major subjects: one from those available for Bachelor of Arts and a different one from those available for Bachelor of Commerce.
  • May include a specified minor subject.

There are about 400 combinations of major subjects available, so it not possible to provide summaries of all BACom programs. The following is only one example, showing a program including the major subject requirements for Communication Studies (an Arts major subject) and Marketing (a Commerce major subject).
