University of Tokyo ADB-JSP Scholarship 2027, Japan (Fully Funded)
The Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) will soon open applications for the 2027 academic year. Funded by the Government of Japan and administered by the Asian Development Bank, this prestigious scholarship offers outstanding students from ADB’s developing member countries the opportunity to pursue fully funded master’s studies at the University of Tokyo. Applicants can choose from several programs within the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS), including Environmental Studies, International Studies, and Sustainability Science.

It is also recommended to begin identifying potential supervisors within GSFS whose research aligns with their academic goals. You will be conferred a Master of Environmental Studies if you finish a master course at any of the above mentioned departments. - Department of International Studies

Students with the nationality of an ADB borrowing member and Japanese ODA scholarship eligible country listed here;
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a citizen of an ADB borrowing member country and Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
- Be admitted to an approved master's course at a Designated Institution.
- Hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent with superior academic record.
- Have at least two years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application.
- Have proficiency in oral and written English communication skills.
- Be not more than 35 years old at the time of application, unless waived in exceptional cases with the expressed endorsement of the Government of Japan.
- Be in good health.
- Agree to return and work in your home country for at least two (2) years after completion of studies under the Program in order to contribute to its development.
- Not be an Executive Director, Alternate Director, management, staff, or consultants of ADB, or their close relatives.
- Not be staff of ADB-JSP Designated Institutions.
- Not be living or working in a country other than your home country.
- Not already be enrolled in graduate degree programs.
Application Procedure

1. Eligibility Check
Before applying, carefully review the official ADB-JSP eligibility requirements on the ADB website. Ensure you meet all conditions related to nationality, academic background, age, work experience, and English proficiency.
2. Find Your Supervisor
- Identify a faculty member within the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) whose research aligns with your interests.
- Check the GSFS department pages
- Explore faculty profiles
- Contactpotential supervisors (if recommended by the department)
- A supervisor match strengthens your application.
3. Submit GSFS Application
- Applicants must submit their online admission application through the University of Tokyo’s GSFS portal.
- Deadline for the 2027 intake: To be announced soon
- Upload all required documents (transcripts, statement of purpose, recommendation letters, etc.)
- Your GSFS application must be completed first, as ADB-JSP only considers admitted applicants.
4. ADB Scholarship Nomination (Conditional)
- Only those who are shortlisted by GSFS will be considered for the ADB-JSP scholarship.
- Additional documents may be required
- Shortlisting usually takes place around mid-February (dates for 2027 will be announced)
- GSFS nominates successful candidates to ADB by late March
5. ADB Selection & Final Results
- The Asian Development Bank reviews all university-nominated candidates.
- Selection decisions are typically announced in May
- Final selection results will be emailed to applicants
6. Admission & Immigration Procedures
Selected scholars will receive guidance from GSFS regarding:
- Admission paperwork
- Visa application process
- Travel arrangements
- Enrollment documents
This process usually runs from May to September.
7. Arrival & Enrollment in Japan
Successful applicants will:
- Arrive in Japan in late September 2027
- Receive a student visa
- Complete final enrollment steps at GSFS
- Begin the Autumn Semester on October 1, 2027
