Scholarship Description: The Academy of Medical Sciences in partnership with the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society, is proud to offer GCRF (Global Challenges Research Fund) Networking Grants for the applicants of developing countries and the UK.

The GCRF is an initiative that aims to support cutting-edge interdisciplinary research that addresses the global issues faced by developing countries. The key goal of the Networking Grants is to bring together novel combinations of perspectives to identify key areas for future research to address the global challenges, inform thinking of how these might be addressed, and build the capacities and relationships required to support this.

The British Academy is the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences – the study of peoples, cultures, and societies, past, present and future.

Available Subject: The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund, which supports cutting-edge research and innovation on global issues affecting developing countries. It harnesses the expertise of the UK’s world-leading researchers, focusing on:

  • Funding challenge-led disciplinary and interdisciplinary research

  • Strengthening capability for research, innovation and knowledge exchange in the UK and developing countries through partnership with excellent UK research and researchers

  • Providing an agile response to emergencies where there is an urgent research or on-the-ground need.


Scholarship Benefits: The awards provide up to £25,000 over 1 year to hold networking events, supporting collaborations between developing countries and the UK looking at global challenges.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following requirements:
Applications should focus on building a collaborative network and therefore should be submitted jointly by a lead overseas researcher from a developing country and a lead researcher based in the UK.

To be eligible to apply, both applicants must:

  • Have completed a PhD or have to experience at an equivalent level

  • Have proven research experience in their field

  • Hold a permanent position at an eligible institution (in the UK or a DAC-listed country), or a fixed term contract for the duration of the award


Lead applicants must not be affiliated with a private or commercial organization. Applications will not be considered if there is more than one UK co-applicant or an overseas applicant not from a DAC-listed country.

This grant forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), which promotes economic development and welfare in developing countries. In order for applications to be eligible for this grant, applicants must clearly show that their proposal’s aims are in-line with those of the ODA. These include strengthening global peace and security, promoting global prosperity and tackling extreme poverty. Projects must start between 1 July 2018 and 30 September 2018, and the funding will last for one year. Application Procedure: 

There will be two funding rounds in 2018, with the first Selection Panel meeting in May.

Applications are invited from researchers affiliated to institutions in DAC-listed countries in collaboration with researchers within eligible UK higher education institutions (HEIs).
