International PhD Programme Fellowships, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Germany

The EMBL International PhD Programme, originally established in 1983, represents the flagship of EMBL's commitment to first class training and education. Internationality, dedicated mentoring and early independence in research characterise our programme. Considered to be one of the most competitive PhD training schemes to enter, we are committed to providing EMBL PhD students with the best starting platform for a successful career in science.

Registration Deadline: 12 Nov 2012

Academic requirements and application procedure

PhD work at EMBL is challenging, intense and intellectually demanding. We welcome applications from highly qualified students of all nationalities. Applicants must hold, or anticipate receiving before enrolment, a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent programme in the country where the degree was obtained. All applications are evaluated solely on the basis of qualification and scientific potential.

Selection advantage rules for PhD students who previously worked at EMBL

The EMBL International PhD Programme invites applications from all highly qualified candidates. The selection process must safeguard the excellence of the programme and its international, inclusive character. The selection process must be transparent, objective and offer balanced chances to all applicants. Therefore, admission of PhD students who previously worked at EMBL is governed by the ‘selection advantage’ rule as outlined below:

  • Association with EMBL during any time of the predoc selection procedure (from the application deadline until the date of initial admissions assessment) and/or an extended association with EMBL of more than three months duration prior to an application are considered to imply a ‘selection advantage’.

  • In order not to limit invitations of eligible external candidates, applicants with a 'selection advantage' from countries where the current representation exceeds 20 % are only eligible to be admitted in exceptional cases following discussion by the Graduate Committee.

  • In addition, the total number of applicants with a 'selection advantage' (from any country) admitted to the programme in a given year must not exceed a quarter of the total number of students admitted in that year.
