Degree Level for Japan MIF Research Fellowship:

Japan MIF Research Fellowship Program 2024/2025. (Partial Funding Up to JPY 340,000) is available to undertake Post Doctorate level programs at Japan Universities.

Benefits for Japan MIF Research Fellowship:

  • Monthly Allowance: Beneficiaries will receive a competitive monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 to cover essential expenses related to research activities, including materials, as well as living expenses in Japan.
  • Arrival Fund: An additional JPY 120,000 is allocated to cover a portion of the initial living costs upon arrival in Japan.
  • Round-trip Air Transportation: Grantees will enjoy the convenience of round-trip economy class airfare provided between the nearest international airport from their domicile and Tokyo, Japan.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive overseas travel insurance, encompassing medical treatment and death benefits, is included for all fellows.
  • Study Tour: As part of the program, fellowship recipients are cordially invited to partake in a distinctive study tour, enhancing their understanding and knowledge of Japan.

Note:

  • The fellowship will be granted only within the period specified in the grant letter, which cannot be extended or shortened.
  • Only the individual specified in the grant letter is eligible for the grant. The MIF will not be involved in any way with regard to the immigration procedures, airline tickets, or accommodation expenses, for the family, companions, etc. of the selected applicant.

Eligible Nationalities for Japan MIF Research Fellowship:

This fellowship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria for Japan MIF Research Fellowship:

Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who align with the core values of the MIF and meet the following requirements are encouraged to submit their application documents:

  1. Applicants must secure an acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
  2. Possession of a Ph.D. (Doctoral degree) is mandatory.
  3. Applicants should be 45 years old or younger at the time of application, with a birth year in or after 1979.
  4. Proficiency in either English or Japanese is required.
  5. Applicants should not have previous or ongoing experiences of extended stays in Japan, except for short-term visits like sightseeing or conferences.
  6. Successful candidates must have an occupation in their home countries, commit to returning upon completing the fellowship, and actively contribute to the development of their respective countries.

Research Fields

Priority will be given to fields of research such as natural science, engineering, and medicine.

Fellowship Period

The fellowship period is six months, spanning from April 2025 to March 2026. Applicants must specify the commencing and ending month in their Application Form (e.g., From September 2025 to February 2026).

Number of Fellowship Recipients

Approximately 15 individuals will be selected for the fellowship.

Host Institution in Japan

Applicants have the freedom to choose a host institution in Japan, including universities, national research institutions, or equivalent facilities in the private sector, to conduct their research. It is essential to secure acceptance from the host institution before submitting the application. The MIF does not provide advice or recommendations regarding host institutions in Japan.

Application Documents (PDF Format):

All documents must be typed in English. Please avoid combining multiple documents into one PDF. Inadequate documents will not be accepted or subjected to screening. The following will be automatically rejected without notice:

  • Emails exceeding 10 MB in size.
  • Emails with attachments using file extensions other than "PDF."
  • Emails with attachments in compressed formats such as "zip" or "rar."
  • Emails containing program files or downloadable links.

Required Documents:

    Application Form:

    • Download from the MIF website.
    • Attach a recent ID photograph taken within the past three months.
    • Ensure the form is filled out precisely using the prescribed format.

      Reason for Application:

      • Download the form from the MIF website.
      • Provide an explanation of "why you are applying for the MIF research fellowship program" in approximately 500 words.

        Research Plan:

        • Submit a detailed research plan including:
          • The content, purpose, and methodology of the research.
          • Roadmap of the research project.
          • The benefits the research project will bring to your home country.
          • Details should be based on discussions with your host professor/scholar in Japan.

            Curriculum Vitae (CV) and List of Publications:

            • Include authors, titles, journal names, page numbers, and publication years.
            • Highlight in yellow the publication related to the intended research project in Japan.

              Recommendation Letter:

              • From your current home institution (employer) on official letterhead.
              • Testify to your academic ability, achievements, and confirm study leave availability during the fellowship period.

                Soft Copies of Academic Certificates/Diplomas:

                • Include Ph.D., Master’s, and Bachelor’s Degrees.
                • Attach English translations if the original documents are not in English (Self-translations not accepted).

                  Invitation Letter:

                  • From and signed by your host professor/scholar in Japan.
                  • Confirm agreement to the fellowship period, research project, and provision of facilities and accommodations.

                  To host professors/scholars in Japan:

                  • Provide full name, institutional affiliation, contact information (postal code, address, telephone, Email address) in both English and Japanese.
                  • Send the signed letter via Email to the applicant for inclusion with their application documents.
