Benefits
Monthly Allowance: Beneficiaries will receive a competitive monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 to cover essential expenses related to research activities, including materials, as well as living expenses in Japan.
Arrival Fund: An additional JPY 120,000 is allocated to cover a portion of the initial living costs upon arrival in Japan.
Round-trip Air Transportation: Grantees will enjoy the convenience of round-trip economy class airfare provided between the nearest international airport from their domicile and Tokyo, Japan.
Insurance: Comprehensive overseas travel insurance, encompassing medical treatment and death benefits, is included for all fellows.
Study Tour: As part of the program, fellowship recipients are cordially invited to partake in a distinctive study tour, enhancing their understanding and knowledge of Japan.
Note:
The fellowship will be granted only within the period specified in the grant letter, which cannot be extended or shortened.
Only the individual specified in the grant letter is eligible for the grant. The MIF will not be involved in any way with regard to the immigration procedures, airline tickets, or accommodation expenses, for the family, companions, etc. of the selected applicant.
Eligible Nationalities
This fellowship is open to international students of all nationalities.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who align with the core values of the MIF and meet the following requirements are encouraged to submit their application documents:
Applicants must secure an acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
Possession of a Ph.D. (Doctoral degree) is mandatory.
Applicants should be 45 years old or younger at the time of application, with a birth year in or after 1979.
Proficiency in either English or Japanese is required.
Applicants should not have previous or ongoing experiences of extended stays in Japan, except for short-term visits like sightseeing or conferences.
Successful candidates must have an occupation in their home countries, commit to returning upon completing the fellowship, and actively contribute to the development of their respective countries.
Research Fields
Priority will be given to fields of research such as natural science, engineering, and medicine.
Fellowship Period
The fellowship period is six months, spanning from April 2025 to March 2026. Applicants must specify the commencing and ending month in their Application Form (e.g., From September 2025 to February 2026).
Number of Fellowship Recipients
Approximately 15 individuals will be selected for the fellowship.
Host Institution in Japan
Applicants have the freedom to choose a host institution in Japan, including universities, national research institutions, or equivalent facilities in the private sector, to conduct their research. It is essential to secure acceptance from the host institution before submitting the application. The MIF does not provide advice or recommendations regarding host institutions in Japan.
