Mobility Grants for Foreign Students, Norway


The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU) is inviting foreign students to apply for Mobility Grants. The grants will be awarded to master or PhD students at departments for Nordic/Scandinavian studies at universities outside Norway.


Norway offers you a unique student experience and Norwegian institutions of higher education welcome applications sent by qualified students from all over the world.




  • Grants are available for one to three months to study/stay at a Norwegian higher education/research institution

  • Grants are awarded in the field of Norwegian language or literature.


Scholarship Award: The grant will cover expenses in connection with the research stay in Norway. The grant is currently NOK 10 092 per month. Fieldwork in one of the three northernmost counties in Norway will, in addition, simply an extra travel grant of NOK 1,000.  Grants for travel to and from Norway are not awarded.

Eligibility Criteria:


The mobility grant may be awarded to the following applicants:




  • Master -or PhD -students at departments for Nordic/Scandinavian studies at universities outside Norway

  • Topic for their thesis must be related directly to Norwegian language and/or Norwegian literature


Who may not apply:




  • Students who have previously received this grant for the same project at the same educational level

  • Bachelor students

  • Students in other fields than Norwegian language or literature


Eligible Nationalities: Foreign students can apply for Mobility Grants.


Application Procedure:




  • The application must be sent online in Espresso. The application must include an extensive and specific description of the project on about one page’s length, with an account of theme, a description of the problem for discussion, a list of sources and reasons for why a stay in Norway is relevant. The applicant must also provide details of a tutor with a teaching and/or research position at an institution of higher learning in Norway, who has agreed to tutor the student during his/her stay in Norway. The tutor must have special competence in the applicant’s topic for a dissertation.

  • A personal invitation letter from the Norwegian institution must be attached to the application. All applicants must also provide details of a tutor at their home institution in their application. The tutor in the country of origin must write a recommendation letter from the applicant and his/her project. The recommendation letter should be written on the institution’s letterhead and signed. The recommendation letter must be attached to the application.

  • Applications without an invitation letter and/or a recommendation letter will not be assessed.
