Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. With around 2600 students and 500 staff members, with around 230 FTEs devoted to academic positions, our faculty is one of the largest of Delft University of Technology and one of the most prestigious architecture and the built environment faculties globally. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment. The faculty has a budget of around €38 million, of which approximately €7 million is sourced indirectly and from contracts with third parties.
OTB - Research for the Built Environment specialises in independent reseach in the field of housing, construction and the built environment. The policy areas of OTB are centred around various aspects of the built environment. Research is carried out into such areas as housing, urban renewal, transport and infrastructure, urban and regional development, sustainable building and building policy, land policy, geo-information resources and GIS technology. OTB is a department in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology.

The Geoinformation and Land Management section undertakes research into the governance, administrative, legal and organisational aspects of geoinformation, real estate law, and the instruments that are (or may be) used in the spatial development of both urban and rural areas. The current research programme focuses on three themes: land development, land tenure and property rights and geoinformation studies. The development and testing of conceptual models play an important role in the section's research.

Job description


This PhD position is a collaboration between the Knowledge Centre Open Data, OTB and the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT). With approximately 30 staff members, the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society is a multidisciplinary team at Tilburg Law School specialising in research and education in the field of technology regulation. At TILT, we conduct research into the legal and social implications of various emerging technologies such as ICT, bio- and nanotechnology, neurotechnology and robotics.
The candidate will work on a project called “Safeguarding data Protection in an Open data World (SPOW)”. The project aims to effectively co-design open data interests and privacy/data protection into a legal construct (a balancing model) that supports the benefits and protects the interests of both, while being able to cope with technological change. Such co-design is core to the development of smart cities and the infrastructures supporting them. This project will apply the requirements for effective co-design of data protection and open data regulations to the smart city domains of transport, energy and eHealth with a view to boosting innovation and strengthening the economy.
The selected candidate will be based at Delft University of Technology, with 50% of the research activities taking place at Tilburg University. Arrangements in this respect will be made in consultation with the candidate.

Requirements


Applicants should hold a (research) Master degree in law, or at least a Bachelor degree in law combined with a Master degree relevant to the project at hand. Applicants must be in possession of a Master degree by 1st May 2015. Applicants should be acquainted with or be able to demonstrate that they are interested in issues regarding open data and/or privacy and data protection. Applicants should have excellent academic qualifications as indicated by their academic records, a strong interest in doing research, an excellent command of spoken and written English, an international orientation/experience, and excellent communication skills. Applicants must also be prepared to travel internationally.
