This module explores the principles and practices of inventory management and whole-life asset costing, providing procurement and supply professionals with the knowledge required to effectively control, store, and manage materials and assets throughout their lifecycle.You will begin by examining the design and operation of storage and warehousing systems, including location strategy, layout design, space utilisation, and workflow efficiency. The module also covers the use of inventory technologies such as product coding systems, barcoding, QR codes, RFID, and order tracking solutions that support accuracy, visibility, and efficiency in inventory operations.A key focus is placed on warehousing methods and equipment, including materials handling equipment (MHE), palletisation, containerisation, and the growing role of automation in modern warehouse environments. You will also explore different classifications of inventory, such as raw materials, work in progress (WIP), finished goods, safety stock, and obsolete or redundant stock.The course examines the costs associated with inventory management, including acquisition, holding, and stockout costs, alongside strategies for reducing costs while maintaining service levels. You will also study key inventory control techniques such as forecasting, reorder systems, MRP, ERP, just-in-time (JIT), and inventory optimisation, as well as performance measures like stock turnover, lead times, and service levels.Finally, the module introduces whole-life costing and asset management principles, covering purchase and acquisition costs, operational and maintenance expenses, and end-of-life disposal options. You will evaluate how environmental, social, and economic factors influence whole-life decisions, including sustainability considerations such as waste management, packaging, decommissioning, and closed-loop systems.
