The Otsuka Toshimi Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization in Japan that provides scholarships to international students studying in fields related to human health or business administration. Established in 1990, the foundation awards scholarships based on academic excellence, motivation, integrity, and contributions to society. Recipients receive financial aid for tuition, living expenses, and research, and are expected to participate in Foundation events and contribute to building a network among scholarship recipients. The foundation aims to foster mutual understanding and cooperation between Japan and other countries by supporting outstanding international students who have leadership potential in their fields.

Scholarship Benefits:

Annual sum of ¥2.0 million, ¥1.5 million or ¥1.0 million
Annual sum of ¥500,000 for applicants receiving scholarships or benefits from other sources (the sum total of scholarships or benefits from other sources received during the scholarship period must be less than 1.8 million yen) 
*Determined on the basis of evaluations by our selection committee. 
*An annual sum of ¥2.5 million may be awarded to a small number of renewing applicants demonstrating excellent research performance and personal integrity.

Note: A scholarship recipient's failure to make satisfactory academic progress or any unethical or immoral behavior or illegal act by the recipient may result in a reduction or withdrawal of his/her scholarship.

Eligible Nationalities:

This scholarship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be self-supporting international students in Japan with "college student" status, 38 years old or younger as of April 1, 2023. They must be enrolled in an official degree program related to human health or business administration. Applicants must have excellent academic records, demonstrate personal integrity, and be involved in creative or innovative research. They must be able to receive guidance and pre-checking of documents from their supervising professor or other person. Applicants must not leave Japan for 40 or more days during the scholarship period, have an international perspective, and be committed to contributing to society. They must also demonstrate a need for financial aid, support Foundation events, build networks between scholarship recipients, and be motivated to study Japanese. Applicants must meet additional requirements specified by the Foundation and complete their studies within the standard period for completion. Night classes, weekend classes, and correspondence education programs are ineligible.

Application Procedure:

Otsuka Foundation has introduced an Application Support System. Applicants must complete online submission then mail the original documents to the Foundation.

*When preparing a typewritten recommendation letter, either the PDF or Excel format may be used. However, the signature must be handwritten by the recommender.
*There are different application forms for applicants from the medical fields and for applicants from the business fields, as well as for new applicants and for renewing applicants. Your application will be ineligible if you do not use the correct form.
