Applications are invited for PhD Fellowship Opportunity within the topic “Optimising Winter oilseed rape management in a mild climate”. International students are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

A key aim of the DAFM funded Opti-BC project is to develop an understanding of the factors impacting on the performance of OSR crops in Ireland and to develop crop management practices that will improve performance in our climate.

Teagasc – the Agriculture and Food Development Authority – is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities.

Degree Level: Fellowship is available to pursue PhD programme.

Available Subject: Fellowship is awarded within the topic: “Optimising Winter oilseed rape management in a mild climate”.

Scholarship Benefits: The PhD Fellowship is part of a joint research project between Teagasc, Oak Park and the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) with further support from ADAS in the UK. The student will be based, at Oak Park under the supervision of Dermot Forristal and registered with WIT under Tony Woodcock. Dr Peter Berry of ADAS will also be involved in the supervision of the work. The fellowship will start in August once a suitable candidate is available. The fellowship provides a stipend of €22,000. University fees are paid by the student from the stipend which is tenable for 4 years.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • Applicants should have a good primary degree (First or Second Class Honours) or M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Agricultural Science, Crop Science, Plant Physiology or similar.). The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated and be prepared for extended periods of field work with accompanying lab and data analysis. The work will include a comprehensive survey of growers commercial crops and an extensive purpose-developed field trial programme.
