Ruth First Scholarship at Rhodes University in South Africa 2015


Applications are invited for Ruth First Scholarship to support a postgraduate student studying full time at Rhodes University towards a Doctoral or Masters degree. The Ruth First Scholarship will carry an award in the amount of R120 000 per annum if awarded at the Doctoral level and R90 000 per annum if awarded at the Masters level. An award at the Doctoral level will be for a maximum period of three years, and at the Masters level for a maximum period of two years. South African and Mozambican black and women candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is 31st July 2014.


Through a generous grant from the Ruth First Trust and the Rhodes University UK Trustees, a prestige scholarship will be endowed to honour the memory, and the spirit of the life and work of Professor Ruth First. The Ruth First Scholarship is intended to support candidates whose research is in the spirit of the life and work of Ruth First, whose research poses difficult social questions, and who are interested in linking knowledge and politics and scholarship and action. Eligible fields of study are: politics, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, economics, social policy, democracy studies, development studies, media studies, or studies in cognate disciplines with a strong social and human rights orientation. South African and Mozambican black and women candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.




  • Scholarships are awarded in the fields of politics, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, economics, social policy, democracy studies, development studies, media studies or studies in cognate disciplines with a strong social and human rights orientation.

  • Scholarship supports a postgraduate student studying full time at Rhodes University towards a Doctoral or Masters degree.

  • Ruth First Trust and the Rhodes University UK Trustees will provide these scholarships.

  • An award at the Doctoral level will be for a maximum period of three years, and at the Masters level for a maximum period of two years.

  • As a prestige scholarship, the Ruth First Scholarship will carry an award in the amount of R120 000 per annum if awarded at the Doctoral level, and R90 000 per annum if awarded at the Masters level, renewable upon positive progress reports being submitted annually by the  supervisor. An individual will not be eligible for consideration at the Doctoral level if they have already received the award at the Masters level. The value of the scholarship will be revised from time to time by the selection committee in consultation with the finance division of Rhodes University, and with due regard to inflationary cost increases and the grown of the endowed funds.

  • Candidates will be assessed on their academic record, their track record of leadership and involvement in projects and organisations related to social and human rights issues, on their ability to clearly articulate their intended area of study under the support of the scholarship, and their future career goals.

  • Applications will be called for by public advertisement, and administered by the Research Office: Postgraduate Funding of Rhodes University. Applicants are requested to submit a letter of motivation (2 pages or more) as to why they would be a potentially suitable candidate for this award and how their proposed research will be within the spirit of Ruth First’s work. In addition, they are requested to submit an academic CV, academic transcript (reflecting percentages) and a copy of an identity document.


Eligibility: All Doctoral and Masters Candidates accepted at Rhodes University in the focus areas of this scholarship will be eligible to apply. South African and Mozambican black and women candidates will be particularly encouraged to apply, and will be shown preference in situations where short listed candidates are deemed to be equally suitable for the award of the scholarship. Preference will also be given to candidates who are able to demonstrate financial need and disadvantaged social origins. The scholarship is specifically intended to support candidates whose research is in the spirit of Ruth First’s life and work, candidates whose work poses difficult social questions, whose work tends to be evidence based, and who are interested in the crossover between knowledge and politics, or academia and action.




  • International students can apply (Preference will be given to South African and Mozambican black and women candidates).
