Applications are invited for University of Nottingham Fellowships which are open to international female researchers. These scholarships will be awarded in STEM (science, technology, engineering and/or medicine) for October 2017 intake.


Anne McLaren Fellowships Scheme targets outstanding early career researchers in most academic disciplines at the University.


The University of Nottingham is a public research university based in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom. It was founded as University College Nottingham in 1881 and was granted a Royal Charter in 1948.


International students whose first language is not English are required to have an appropriate grade/score in an approved examination in English language (such as IELTS) Academic) before they can register on an academic programme.


Course Level: Fellowships are available to undertake research.


Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded in STEM (science, technology, engineering and/or medicine) subjects.


Scholarship Award: Each fellowship offers:




  • Three years independent funding, normally starting October 2017, to conduct research while based at The University of Nottingham

  • Competitive salary between £28,982 and £46,414 (Level 4 or 5 R&T) dependent on experience

  • The linking of the Fellowship to an indefinite academic post, subject to performance against a high-quality threshold and the continued right to work in the UK1

  • The opportunity to apply for additional funding for research expenses up to £25,000 per annum

  • Additional childcare costs of up to £5000 per annum where appropriate

  • Relocation expenses of up to £1500

  • The opportunity to spend periods of time at The University of Nottingham campuses in Malaysia and China

  • Participation in a mentoring scheme and career development programme


Subject to performance and meeting objectives defined in the Performance Development Review Process (PDPR) which reports to Research Board. Please check individual requirements with the school which you are applying to.


Scholarship can be taken in the UK


Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these fellowships:


Candidates must have been awarded their PhD prior to the Expression of interest submission date, and should have no more than 8 years of post-doctoral experience following the award of their PhD. Career breaks such as maternity leave, EU national service, and Voluntary Service Overseas can be discounted, but teaching experience and/or time spent in the industry since the award of a PhD should amount to no more than 96 months.


Candidates for the Anne McLaren Fellowships must be female and pursuing a career in a STEM subject.


Candidates for the Nottingham Research Fellowships can be from any academic discipline across the University, provided the host school is participating in the scheme.


Candidates must demonstrate experience sufficient to confirm their ability to complete the proposed programme of work.


The University of Nottingham will act as sponsor for any candidate who does not have the right to work in the UK.


Candidates should be able to demonstrate:




  • An outstanding track record of research including high-quality publications, research funding and/or prizes and awards

  • Evidence of a growing reputation, both nationally and internationally

  • An aptitude to lead and inspire others within the research team and institution more broadly

  • Potential to act as an ambassador in their research field and more widely


Part-time appointments will be considered on a pro-rata basis.


Individuals who have been promised or already have a permanent position are considered to have achieved the aims of the scheme already and will not be eligible.


Nationality: These Anne McLaren Fellowships are open for the UK and international students.




UK Scholarships


How to Apply: The application process for this scheme is a four-stage process.




  • The first step requires candidates to make contact with the school or department where they are interested in applying. This is to help ensure that schools and departments are able to support your Fellowship project

  • The second stage is the submission of an Expression of Interest form (EOI), which provides a brief outline of the proposed project and details about the applicant. Forms must be submitted to the named contact in the host school or department. The deadline for expressions of interest to be submitted is 5pm, 4th November 2016

  • Following the review of the expression of interest submissions, short-listed applicants will be invited submit a full application. The deadline for full applications to be submitted to fellowships-at-nottingham.ac.uk will be 20th January 2017

  • Candidates will be notified in early March regarding invitations to attend an interview, likely to be w/c 20th March.
