The University of British Columbia is pleased to offer Public Scholars Award for Canadian and international students. Funding is available for up to 30 new students to pursue doctoral dissertation program at the faculty of graduate and postdoctoral Studies.The UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI) is an innovative pilot program intended to explore how a top-tier university can support doctoral pathways that encourage purposeful social contribution, innovative forms of collaborative scholarship and broader career readiness for students.The University of British Columbia is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the 40 best universities in the world.



Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application.



Degree Level: Award is available for pursuing doctoral dissertation program at University of British Columbia.



Study Subject: Public scholars may be said to engage in scholarship that entails mutually beneficial partnerships of university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to contribute to the public good through: enriching knowledge, scholarship, creative activity, intellectual curiosity, and wonder; enhancing curriculum, teaching and learning; preparing educated, engaged citizens; and/or addressing and helping solve critical problems.

Eligibility:




  • Doctoral students (PhD, EdD, and DMA) in years 1-5
    Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study as of 31 August 2016.
    Applicants must be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of 1 September 2016.

  • Requirements for all funded students:
    Submission of a report at the end of their first (and if applicable, second) year of funding
    Presentation of their work at a Network event
    All students, faculty, and collaborators will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of their funding/involvement. Student dissertations and student completion and career outcomes will also be reviewed as part of the assessment of this pilot initiative.



Eligible Nationalities: Canadian and international students can apply for these scholarships.



Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study as of 31 August 2016.



English Language Requirement: The minimum total score on the Internet-based TOEFL for all applicants to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is 80. The minimum total score for the paper-based test is 550. Acceptable alternatives to the TOEFL include CAEL, CELPIP, IELTS, MELAB and PTE.



Scholarship Award: Up to $10,000 per student is available to support innovative/collaborative scholarship which the student would otherwise be unable to pursue. Funding can be used for:




  • Student stipend, if the student’s current funding source would not allow the alternative project(s)

  • A research allowance (including allowance for professional development or travel relevant to the scholarly work)



Supporting Material: In addition to the PSI Fellowship application form, applicant must submit the following materials:
Canadian Common CV: Applicants are required to complete the CCV from the Canadian Common CV as part of their PSI Fellowship application. Free-form CVs are not accepted. Applicants to the PSI Fellowship competition must complete the Vanier-Banting Academic CV template of of the CCV.
Letters of Support: The application must be accompanied by a letter of support and engagement from the applicant’s supervisor.
