What is the Council Traineeship Programme?
The Council Traineeship Programme is a biannual, full-time paid internship offered by the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU (GSC). It gives young professionals and university graduates exposure to EU decision-making, policy development, and institutional operations. Trainees join one of the GSC departments and assist with research, documentation, translation, communication, policy analysis, and more.

Traineeship Periods:
- First session: 16 February – 15 July 2026
- Second session: 1 September 2026 – 31 January 2027

Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following Council traineeship eligibility criteria:
- Nationality: EU citizens; special positive action program for students with disabilities
- Education: Must have completed at least a university degree (main programme) or be in their third year (positive action programme)
- Languages: Proficiency in English or French (C1 level) and very good knowledge of another EU language
- Experience: Must not have worked or interned in any EU institution for more than 6 weeks
- Age Limit: No age restrictions apply
What Will You Do?
As a Council of the EU trainee, your tasks will vary depending on your department. You could be placed in:
Policy Teams & Legal Services:
- Assisting in EU legislative work
- Preparing Council meetings
- Writing briefing documents and minutes
- Conducting research and analysis
Support Teams:
- Assisting in communication and media
- Translation tasks
- Supporting IT, HR, or event management teams
- Organizing conferences and publications
Trainees can select two preferred departments during the application process.
