UMAT Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) is conducted under the administration of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of the UMAT Consortium universities. It is conducted to analyze the skills and knowledge of the candidates in critical thinking and problem solving, understanding people and abstract non-verbal reasoning.

ACER conducts UMAT entrance test every year for the admission of the candidates in undergraduate level courses in the field of medical, dentistry and health sciences. UMAT is an aptitude test, which has not a particular curriculum and subjects. Various universities accept candidates’ UMAT scores while doing admission in these UG courses.

The registration for Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) 2011 starts from April 1, 2011 and closes on June 3, 2011. ACER will conduct UMAT entrance test on July 27, 2011. Results are expected to be released in September 2011.

Eligibility

The eligibility criterion for UMAT entrance test does not require any particular qualification. However, all the candidates are required to have passed final year of their secondary schooling or higher. Candidates who are appearing in their final year of examination are also eligible to apply for UMAT entrance test. The level of schooling examination may vary to one country to another, for example, year 12 in Australia while in New Zealand is year 13. Those candidates who are appearing in 11 year in Australia or year 12 in New Zealand are not eligible for UMAT entrance test.

UMAT Test Format

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) is a two hour and 45 minute multiple-choice test. All the questions in the entrance test are purposefully asked to prepare students in critical thinking and reasoning that are essential in medical, dental and other health sciences subjects. Students’ scores in UMAT are accepted by various universities across the countries.

ACER is committed to make sure the content, style and duration of UMAT remain relevant, fair and unfailing. The question paper will be consisted of few trial questions which will not add to candidate’s UMAT scores. All the questions in UMAT are objective in nature. The question paper is divided into three sections: logical reasoning and problem solving; understanding people and non-verbal reasoning. No rest or break will be given to candidates between these sections.

Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving (Section One)

Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving, which is the section one of UMAT test, comprises of almost 44 multiple-choice type questions. All the questions in this section are expected to be answered by candidates within 65 minutes duration. The questions are asked to test candidate’s skills in evaluating solutions, draw logical conclusions, identifying facts and so on.

Understanding People (Section Two)

There may be around 40 objective type questions in the section two of UMAT exam i.e. understanding people. Candidates have to answer all the questions within 50 minutes duration. Questions are asked from given passages, which are based on any scenario or any particular interpersonal situations. Understanding of people’s behaviour, feelings and intentions is very important to deal with the questions of this section.

Non-verbal Reasoning (Section Three)

Non-verbal Reasoning is the section three of UMAT test. It will consist of around 38 multiple-choice type questions, which are required to be answered by candidates within 50 minutes duration. Questions in this section determine your reasoning ability to solve problems in non-verbal method.

UMAT Preparation

There is no particular syllabus or recommended material to prepare for Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT). The main aim of conducting UMAT is to access the ability of candidates for medical, dental and health sciences undergraduate subjects. Therefore, no particular study material is prescribed by ACER.
