Overview
The Master of City Planning program at the University of New South Wales provides students with the chance to focus on one of four essential areas: City Development and Renewal, City Design, History and Theory, or Healthy Sustainable Communities. This program is crafted to equip you with the necessary skills for effective urban planning and policy-making.
During your second year, you will undertake a substantial independent research project, allowing you to enhance your expertise in your selected specialization. Alternatively, students following the City Design pathway can participate in the Urban Design Studio, collaborating with peers from the Master of Urban Development and Design.
This program lays a strong foundation for careers in urban planning and policy across diverse sectors, including government, consultancy, and property development.

Entry requirements
Academic Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree with a credit average is required. Applicants with a relevant undergraduate degree may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Advanced standing may be granted for completed or partially completed postgraduate awards. Those who do not meet standard admission criteria may initially enter the Graduate Certificate in City Planning, subject to assessment by the Program Director.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following:
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 90
- PTE Academic: Minimum score of 64
- IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5
