Overview

The Juris Doctorate–Public Health (JD/MPH) is a dual-degree pathway that combines legal training with graduate-level public health education. You complete your first year at Drexel’s Kline School of Law and then study across both schools to graduate with both degrees.

About this programme

Overview

The Juris Doctorate in Public Health (JD/MPH) at Drexel University is a unique dual-degree program that merges the disciplines of law and public health. This innovative pathway equips students with essential legal expertise alongside advanced public health knowledge, preparing graduates for impactful careers at the intersection of these fields. Students will begin their journey at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law, followed by integrated studies at both the law school and the Dornsife School of Public Health.

What you'll study

The program typically spans four years, during which students will engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes:

  • Year 1 (Law School): The first year focuses on the foundational curriculum at the Kline School of Law.
  • Years 2–3 (Law + Public Health): Students will take courses from both the law and public health schools, including core coursework in public health management and policy.
  • Co-op and Applied Project: Throughout the program, students will participate in a co-op experience in a public health law setting and complete a public health project related to their co-op.
  • Completion: Most students are able to earn both degrees in approximately three to three-and-a-half years, depending on their course load and choices.

Note on Course Selection: Students will work with academic advisors to plan their elective courses and ensure they meet all requirements for both degrees.

Entry requirements

  • Law School Admission First: Applicants must first gain admission to the Kline School of Law. Once admitted, they may then be considered for the School of Public Health.
  • Dual-Degree Timing: Students may also apply for the JD/MPH program during their first year at law school on a case-by-case basis.

Career prospects

Graduates of the JD/MPH program are well-positioned for diverse career opportunities in both legal and public health sectors. They may pursue roles in governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, healthcare institutions, and private law firms, focusing on public health law, policy advocacy, and health management. The combination of legal and public health expertise provides a competitive edge in tackling complex health-related legal issues and contributing to community health initiatives.

Work Permits

Work authorization following graduation will depend on individual immigration status and the regulations in the student's country of citizenship and residence. For international students at Drexel University, a common option is to apply for a post-study work permit that allows eligible graduates to work in the United States for a limited duration.

  • Typical Post-Study Option (United States): Graduates may qualify for post-completion work authorization through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) process, provided they meet the necessary eligibility criteria.
  • Duration: The length of OPT can vary based on the program and eligibility. Certain fields related to STEM may qualify for extended authorization.
