World’s Most Advanced Humanoid Robot Ameca Speaks Multiple Languages Thanks to ChatGPT

Ameca, the humanoid robot developed by Engineered Arts, can now speak English, Japanese, German, Chinese, and French. The team used Chat GPT-3 for conversation and translation, DeepL for language detection, and Amazon Polly Neural voices for its speaking capabilities. However, the processing time with GPT-4 was found to be longer than GPT-3, making Ameca less responsive. The team is now working on ElevenLabs voice cloning to make Ameca’s speaking more lifelike and complex. While Ameca cannot walk yet, Engineered Arts is developing a bipedal, mobile version. This latest update comes days after a video showcasing Ameca’s lifelike facial expressions and emotive responses to questions.

Ameca, which is described as the “world’s most advanced humanoid robot,” is the creation of Engineered Arts. It was unveiled in December 2021 and was given lifelike facial expressions last August. Now, the team at Engineered Arts has used the power of artificial intelligence to enable Ameca to speak multiple languages, including English, Japanese, German, Chinese and French. To achieve this feat, the team employed Chat GPT-3 for conversation and translation, DeepL for language detection, and Amazon Polly Neural voices for its speaking capabilities.

However, the team is not resting on its laurels. They are now working on a demonstration using ElevenLabs voice cloning to make Ameca’s speaking more lifelike and complex. The team has noted that the processing time with GPT-4 was much longer than GPT-3, which made Ameca appear less responsive.

While Ameca is not yet mobile and unable to walk, Engineered Arts is developing a bipedal, mobile version. However, the company acknowledged that there are many hurdles to overcome before Ameca can walk. Walking is a difficult task for a robot, and although they have done research into it, they have not created a full walking humanoid.

Just a few days before the announcement of Ameca’s multilingual abilities, a video was released demonstrating the robot’s facial expressions, as well as its response to emotive questions such as the happiest and saddest days of its life. Ameca responded that the happiest day was when it was activated, while its saddest day was when it realized it would never feel love.

The advancement of Ameca and other humanoid robots highlights the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, which is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives. The integration of AI technology into robotics has enabled them to perform complex tasks and communicate in multiple languages, which has far-reaching implications for industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and customer service. As the technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see what new capabilities robots such as Ameca will possess in the near future.
