The Indigenous Teacher Education program at Queen’s University is designed for individuals passionate about teaching while grounded in Indigenous education and community-informed learning. This innovative program allows students to engage in coursework through various community-based sites across Ontario, with opportunities for Transitional Certification pathways for current educators.

  • Credential: Indigenous Teacher Education (ITEP) program leading to eligibility for OCT certification, subject to Ontario College of Teachers requirements.
  • Delivery: Community-based learning at one of five Ontario sites.
  • Transitional Certification option: Available for eligible candidates already teaching in a school environment through the MTCQR pathway.
  • Language of instruction: English.
  • English language tests: Examples of accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Duolingo English Test.

In addition to classroom learning, candidates are required to complete practicum components as outlined by the program and OCT certification pathway. Those eligible for Transitional Certification (Learn & Earn) can fulfill practicum requirements while maintaining their teaching positions.

Community site placement: Candidates can choose or be assigned to one of the community-based sites, which may include locations such as Manitoulin–North Shore, Lambton–Kent, Mushkegowuk Territory, Tyendinaga, or Pikangikum.

Entry requirements

Applicants must possess an acceptable undergraduate degree, typically a minimum of a three-year General degree.

Those admitted without an undergraduate degree should be of Indigenous ancestry and must provide documentary proof of ancestry as required by the Ontario College of Teachers during the certification application process. Candidates are responsible for confirming necessary documentation with OCT ahead of time.
