What you'll study

The BIS curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive educational experience, blending essential degree components with elective courses that align with your professional and personal interests.

  • Concentration area: Complete 8 courses in your selected concentration subject area.
  • Senior-level coursework: Undertake 11 courses at the 3000 and 4000 levels, with a minimum performance requirement of 65% in at least 7 of these courses.
  • Introductory-level limit: A maximum of 12 courses at the 1000 level is permitted.
  • Required portfolio course: University/BIS 1930 – Creating a Career and Learning Portfolio.
  • Electives: Choose electives from Arts, Business, or Science disciplines.
  • English requirement: Complete one of UPEI 1010 / ENG 1010, 1020, or 1030.
  • Indigenous requirement: IKE 1040 – Indigenous Teachings of Turtle Island (available for students beginning or returning after re-application).
  • Writing requirement: Complete one Writing Intensive course.

Note: Your final study plan will be confirmed by UPEI, taking into consideration your prior education, transfer credit evaluation, and PLAR outcomes, if applicable.

Entry requirements

Applicants to the BIS program must demonstrate English proficiency. The minimum required scores for various English language tests include:

  • IELTS: 6.5 (overall)
  • TOEFL iBT: 80 (total)
  • PTE Academic: 58 (overall)
  • Duolingo English Test: 120 (overall)

The program is specifically designed for mature and adult learners, with the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants should have been out of secondary school for at least seven years.
  • Applicants must possess Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status.

While high school graduation is not always mandatory, applicants must meet the criteria assessed by UPEI’s Registrar’s Office, including the submission of official records or transcripts from post-secondary institutions.
