Applicants must possess a completed bachelor’s degree in law or an equivalent qualification that is recognized for admission to the Australian legal profession. Students who are in the process of completing their law degree may also apply, provided they have no more than two units remaining to finish before the course begins, and these units do not include the "Priestly 11" units. Permission from the Queensland Legal Practitioners Admissions Board is necessary to enroll in the Graduate Diploma while completing outstanding units.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice may be eligible for a post-study work permit in Australia, allowing them to gain practical work experience for a period of 18 months to 4 years, depending on their qualifications and study location.
