Overview

The Reading Specialist (Online) program at Drexel University is designed for educators aiming to enhance their skills in literacy instruction for students in grades K–12. This program focuses on assessing literacy needs and delivering research-informed reading and writing instruction. Participants will also receive training in the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Level I, along with the Pennsylvania Reading Specialist Certification pathway.

What you'll study

The program is delivered entirely online and includes core coursework that builds advanced literacy knowledge and practical instructional decision-making. The curriculum encompasses essential literacy courses, as well as WRS Level I training, necessary for certification. Key subjects include:

• Theories of Reading and Writing
• Understanding Literacy Through Sociocultural Perspectives
• Reading and Writing in the Content Areas (7–12)
• Constructing Meaning Through Reading and Writing
• Literacy and Evaluation
• Responding to Children’s and Young Adult Literature

Course titles may be offered in a sequence determined by the program schedule. Students will complete all required components to earn the Reading Specialist Certification pathway and WRS Level I certification.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the Reading Specialist (Online) program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• GPA Requirement: A minimum graduate GPA of 3.0, which will be considered alongside the undergraduate GPA.
• English Language Proficiency: If required, applicants must submit TOEFL iBT scores, with a minimum score of 79.

The program is specifically designed for educators who already hold an Instructional I certificate from Pennsylvania or another state.
