Fellowships for Developing Countries Students 2015

POGO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) are jointly offering visiting research fellowships for a maximum of a three-month period. The fellowship program is open to scientists, technicians, graduate students (PhD) and post-doctoral fellows involved in oceanographic work at centres in developing countries  and countries with economies in transition. The application deadline is 31 March, 2015.

Study Subject(s): The fellowship is awarded in
-Fixed-point time-series observations (e.g. contributing to OceanSITES, ChloroGIN, Antares)
-Large-scale, operational biological observations including biodiversity (e.g. Continuous Plankton Recorder)
-Emerging technologies for ocean observations
-Coastal observations/ Coastal zone management
-Oxygen and Other Biogeochemical Sensors on Floats and Gliders
-Time series measurements of N2O and CH4
-Ocean and coastal modelling
-Data management
-Argo floats

Eligibility:
– The fellowship program is open to scientists, technicians, graduate students (PhD) and post-doctoral fellows involved in oceanographic work at centres in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
-Priority is given to applicants in early stages of career development.

• This programme is jointly funded by POGO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and is designed to promote training and capacity building leading towards a global observation scheme for the oceans. The Programme has been a success for over ten years, with over 150 fellowships awarded since 2001.


• The POGO-SCOR Visiting Fellowship programme will only provide funds for a maximum of a three-month period. If an applicant is able to secure a longer visit with the host supervisor, this is acceptable, but the fellow will need to find additional funds for his/her stay beyond the first three months.


• Fellowship covers:
  -1-3 month visit to another oceanographic institute anywhere in the world
  -Training on any aspect of oceanographic observations, analyses, and interpretation
  -International airfare
  -Transport from airport to host institution
  -Contribution towards living expenses


• The Selection Criteria involve a number of factors including:
  -Quality of the application;
  -Relevance of the application to the priority areas identified in the Fellowship Announcement (Argo Floats; Fixed-Point Time-Series Observations; Large-scale, Operational Biological Observations including Biodiversity; Emerging Technologies for Ocean Observations; Data management; Coastal observations/ Coastal Zone Management; Ocean and coastal modelling; oxygen and other biogeochemical sensors on floats and gliders; time series measurements of N2O and CH4)
  -Evidence that the training will lead to capacity-building with potential lasting impact on regional observations; and,
  -The need to maximize regional distribution of the awards.


• Fellowship applicants should submit and submit electronically the application form, together with a recommendation letter from the parent supervisors and a letter of acceptance from the prospective host supervisor. Only the parent supervisor recommendation letter needs to be submitted as a hard copy. Only applications that are complete in all respects will be considered for the fellowship.

The application deadline is 31 March, 2015.
