Description for Matsumae International Fellowship:

Matsumae International Fellowship 2025 in Japan (Fully Funded) is open for International Students . The scholarship allows Fellowship level program(s) in the field of Medicine, Engineering, Natural Sciences taught at Japan Universities . The deadline of the scholarship is 30 Jun 2024.

Degree Level for Matsumae International Fellowship:

Matsumae International Fellowship 2025 in Japan (Fully Funded) is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at Japan Universities.

FELLOWSHIP PERIOD:

Six months between April 2025 to March 2026. Please indicate the commencing and ending month in your Application Form (#1). (E.g., From September 2025 to February 2026.) 

 NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS:

 Around 15 

 HOST INSTITUTION IN JAPAN:

Applicants are free to choose a host institution in Japan (universities, national research institutions, or the equivalent facilities in private sector) to carry out their research. Please be sure to obtain an acceptance from the host institution prior to application. The MIF is not in a position to give advice or recommendations to applicants regarding host institutions in Japan

Benefits for Matsumae International Fellowship:

Monthly Allowance

  •  A monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 is provided to cover expenses for research activities (including materials) and living expenses in Japan. 

Arrival Fund

  • JPY 120,000 is provided to cover part of the initial costs of living in Japan. 

Round-trip Air Transportation

  • Round-trip economy class airfare is provided between the nearest international airport from a grantee’s domicile and Tokyo, Japan. 

Insurance 

  • Overseas travel insurance with medical treatment and death benefit is provided. 

Study Tour

  • The MIF invites fellowship recipients to participate in a study tour during their fellowship to deepen their knowledge of Japan.

Eligible Nationalities for Matsumae International Fellowship:

International Students of all nationalities can apply for this fellowship. (Except Japanese)

Eligibility Criteria for Matsumae International Fellowship:

This program is open to international applicants (non-Japanese nationality) who demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Alignment with MIF Values:
A strong understanding and appreciation for the core values of the MIF is essential.
  • Host Institution Sponsorship:
You must have secured a letter of acceptance from a qualified academic institution in Japan willing to host you during your program tenure.
  • Doctoral Degree:
Possession of a Ph.D. (Doctoral degree) is mandatory.
  • Age Requirement:
Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the application deadline. (Born in or after 1979)
  • Language Proficiency:
Strong English or Japanese language skills are required for successful participation in the program.
  • Limited Prior Experience in Japan:
This program prioritizes applicants with limited experience in Japan (excluding short visits for tourism or conferences).
  • Current Employment:
You must be currently employed in your home country at the time of application.



Application Procedure for Matsumae International Fellowship:

Applicants are required to submit their application documents to the MIF via email.

Applications submitted outside the specified period will not be accepted under any circumstances.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

Submit the following documents as separate PDFs via email to application@mif-japan.org. All documents must be in English.

  • Application Form: Download from the MIF website. Attach a recent ID photo.
  • Statement of Purpose: Explain your motivation for applying (500 words).
  • Research Plan: Detail research content, objectives, and roadmap, with input from your Japanese host.
  • CV and Publication List: Include relevant publications highlighted in yellow.
  • Recommendation Letter: From your current employer, confirming academic ability and study leave availability.
  • Academic Certificates: Soft copies of Ph.D., Master's, and Bachelor's certificates (English translations if necessary).
  • Invitation Letter: From your Japanese host, confirming agreement to the fellowship period, research project, and support.
  • Note to Host Professors/Scholars in Japan: Provide a letter with full name, institutional affiliation, and contact details in both English and Japanese.
