The Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships (AGRTPS) at Flinders University present an exceptional opportunity for international students to pursue their research aspirations. Highly competitive, with up to 6 scholarships awarded annually, the AGRTPS prioritizes candidates with exceptional research potential. Academic merit, research training and experience, and research performance are the key selection criteria. Research doctorate candidates can receive funding for up to three years, while research masters candidates can receive support for up to two years. This scholarship is exclusively available to students commencing their first research degree in Australia.

The AGRTPS scholarship provides comprehensive financial support to help you focus on your research goals:

  • Living Stipend: 
You'll receive a generous annual stipend of $33,990 (2024 full-time rate), tax-free, to cover your living expenses in Australia.
  • Reduced Tuition Fees: 
The scholarship includes a Research Training Program (RTP) place. This translates to a significant reduction in your tuition fees for up to four years of study.
  • Relocation Assistance:
If you're moving to Adelaide from overseas, you'll be eligible for an establishment allowance of up to $1,485 upon arrival at Flinders University. This allowance helps with relocation costs and airfare, provided you can show receipts for these expenses.

English Language Requirements

If English isn't your first language, you'll need to demonstrate English proficiency to be admitted. Here's how you can do that:

  • Get the required score on an accepted English language test like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Cambridge tests. The specific score depends on the program you're applying for (see table). Remember, these tests must be taken at a registered testing center.
  • Have a qualifying English-taught degree 
  • (secondary or higher) completed in a country where English is the main language. This can be used for programs requiring an IELTS score of up to 6.5, but the qualification evidence must be less than five years old.
  • Complete a pre-course English program  from an approved ELICOS provider.

Temporary COVID-19 measure: Until Semester 2, 2023 (inclusive), we'll accept English language test results up to three years old due to testing disruptions. Normally, the results can't be older than two years.

Important Notes:

  • OET scores are only accepted for specific healthcare programs in Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
  • For Bachelor of Nursing (both Pre-Registration and Graduate Entry) and Bachelor of Midwifery programs, accepted tests are IELTS (Academic), TOEFL (Internet), PTE (Academic), or OET. Pre-course programs (ELICOS) are not applicable for these programs.

Eligible Nationalities for Flinders University Australian Government RTP Scholarship:

This scholarship is open to citizen of any overseas country except New Zealand, and do not hold Australian citizenship, Australian permanent resident status or New Zealand citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria for Flinders University Australian Government RTP Scholarship:

The AGRTPS scholarship is open to international students who meet the following criteria:

  • First-Time Research Students: 
This scholarship is intended for students commencing their first full-time research degree (Doctorate or Masters) in Australia.
  • Exceptions may be considered for students who:

  1. Started their research degree in the previous year but couldn't apply for AGRTPS due to application timing.
  2. Started a research degree but discontinued it within the first six months.

  • Research Area Alignment:

 You must be planning to enroll in an area of research focus at Flinders University. These are research areas where the university excels, invests resources, and attracts external funding.

Application Procedure for Flinders University Australian Government RTP Scholarship:

Before You Apply:

  • Read this entire guide carefully! It includes essential information for completing a strong application.
  • Use the application checklist (provided separately) to ensure you have all required documents.
  • Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Key Application Requirements

Research Supervisor:

  • Find a Flinders University academic staff member willing to supervise your research (if successful).
  • Include email confirmation of their agreement with your application.
  • Applications without a supervisor will not be considered.
Publications (up to 5):
  • Include evidence of your published research.
  • Each publication needs a completed coversheet (provided).
  • Publications are used to assess your research experience.
  • If you have more than five publications:
  • Discuss the top five with your chosen supervisor and explain your selection.
  • List additional publications in your CV (coversheets not required)
  • Typically, only English publications are accepted (exceptions considered for specific situations).
  • Publications must be within the last 5 years.
  • Highly competitive: Applicants without publications are less likely to succeed.
Academic Transcripts (English translations):
  • Provide certified copies of all university transcripts.
  • Secondary school certificates or non-educational awards are not accepted.

Research Proposal (500 words):
  • Outline your research problem, hypothesis/question, and methodology.
Academic Referees (2):
  • Choose two referees with knowledge of your academic ability and research potential.
  • Complete Section A of the Academic Referee's Confidential Report forms for each.
  • Forward the forms directly to your chosen referees.
  • Indicate on your application form who the reports were sent to.
  • Ensure your referees return the reports to rhdscholarships@flinders.edu.au by the deadline.
Curriculum Vitae (CV):
  • Include your updated CV with work experience, research experience, and a complete list of publications.
Formatting and Language:
  • All documents must be uploaded in English and saved as PDFs.
  • Scan and save documents in the correct orientation.
  • Name all documents with your family name and document name (e.g., name_Transcript, name_publication 1).

Scholarship Application:
  • Activate your account using your Student ID and date of birth.
  • You'll receive a Flinders Authentication Name (FAN) to submit your scholarship application.
  • Log in to your OKTA dashboard and select "Student System" then "My Scholarship" tab.
  • Click "Create a new scholarship application" and select "2024 International RHD Scholarship Group."
  • If you graduated from Flinders University more than 12 months ago, reactivate your FAN before applying.
