Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowships

Overview

The Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship is a new component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program that provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to participate in an academic year of overseas travel and digital storytelling in up to three countries on a globally significant social or environmental topic. This Fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society.
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1946, the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program, designed to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries.

The Award

The Fulbright-National Geographic Fellowship provides a unique platform for U.S. Fulbright awardees to build awareness of transnational challenges, comparing and contrasting cross-border issues.
This new component of the Fulbright Program will offer up to five awards to U.S. citizens. Over a nine-month period, awardees will create multimedia stories on globally significant social or environmental topics including biodiversity, cities, climate change, cultures, energy, food, oceans, and water. Fellows will share their stories through National Geographic’s platforms, using a variety of digital storytelling tools, including text, photography, video, audio, graphic illustrations, and/or social media.
Fellows receive Fulbright benefits (for travel, stipend, health etc.) and instruction in storytelling techniques (effective blog writing, video production, and photography) and mentorship from National Geographic staff  throughout the program.
Eligible countries include those where there is an active Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
