The opportunity is aimed at applicants whose academic background is relevant to the research project.

You may be eligible if you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or another closely related field. Current PhD students working in a relevant discipline can also be considered.

There is, however, an additional requirement for applicants entering with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. They must be enrolled in a non-degree course. Applicants may initially provide a declaration confirming their intention to enrol, but formal evidence of enrolment will be required when the scholarship agreement is signed.

Current PhD students will need to provide proof of their doctoral enrolment.

International applicants should also pay attention to recognition of foreign academic qualifications. If your degree was awarded outside Portugal, check the recognition and documentation requirements early rather than waiting until the application deadline.

Benefits

The selected researcher receives €1,359.64 per month.

The initial scholarship period is 10 months, although it may be extended to a maximum of 12 months, depending on the applicable conditions and continuation of the research project.

Because this is a research scholarship rather than a conventional university-wide degree scholarship, applicants should carefully distinguish the funding from a typical fully funded master's or PhD package.

The opportunity is particularly attractive because it combines a monthly research stipend with full-time laboratory experience at a Portuguese university.

Eligibility Criteria

How Are Applicants Selected?

The selection process places significant emphasis on the applicant's existing academic and research profile.

The assessment is divided among several components:

  • Academic background: 30%
  • Scientific publications: 10%
  • Relevant laboratory experience: 20%
  • Motivation: 10%
  • Other relevant experience: 10%
  • Interview: 20%

This makes the applicant's CV worth 60% of the overall assessment before the interview stage.

Only the three highest-ranked candidates following the initial evaluation are expected to proceed to the interview.

Applicants must also achieve at least 9.5 out of 20 to remain eligible.

What Does This Mean for Applicants?

If you have laboratory experience, do not hide it inside a long CV.

Clearly highlight experience related to:

  • Immunology
  • Molecular biology
  • Cell culture
  • Flow cytometry
  • Sequencing
  • Microscopy
  • Animal research
  • Biochemistry
  • Vaccine research

Similarly, if you have published research papers, presented at conferences or completed a relevant thesis, make those achievements easy for the selection committee to identify.Starting early also gives you more time to improve your motivation letter and present your laboratory experience effectively.

Application Procedure

Documents Required for the Application

Applicants should prepare their documents before submitting the application.

The application is expected to include materials such as:

  • Completed application form
  • Motivation letter
  • Signed and dated CV
  • Academic certificates

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is This Veterinary Scholarship Worth Applying For?

For applicants with a relevant academic background and laboratory experience, yes.

The position offers €1,359.64 per month, full-time research experience and the opportunity to work on a project involving cattle immunology and long-lasting antibody responses.

However, this is a single-position research scholarship, so applicants should expect competition. Academic qualifications alone may not be enough. The selection criteria show that laboratory experience, publications, motivation and interview performance can all influence the final result.

If your career goal involves veterinary medicine, immunology, molecular biology, animal health or vaccine research, this opportunity could provide valuable European research experience.

The most important step is to demonstrate a clear connection between your previous academic or laboratory experience and the University of Lisbon research project. A targeted application will be much stronger than a generic scholarship application.

Do You Need IELTS for the University of Lisbon Veterinary Scholarship?

The scholarship call requires applicants to demonstrate excellent English and excellent Portuguese.

However, the call does not specify a minimum IELTS or TOEFL score for applicants.

Therefore, applicants should not assume that an IELTS 6.5 or another specific score is mandatory unless it is separately required by the relevant institution or procedure.

Instead, candidates should be prepared to demonstrate the required language abilities through the documentation or assessment process specified by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The Portuguese-language requirement is especially important because this is an on-site research position rather than a conventional English-only international degree programme.

What Research Will the Selected Candidate Conduct?

The research project is titled “Deciphering the cellular mechanisms underlying high-affinity long-lasting antibody responses in cattle.”

The work focuses on understanding the immune mechanisms responsible for producing durable antibody responses in cattle. The findings could contribute to future research involving animal health, immunology and vaccine development.

Depending on the research activities assigned to the successful candidate, the work can involve techniques such as:

  • Cattle and mouse immunisation
  • Biological sample collection
  • Single-cell RNA sequencing
  • Flow cytometry
  • Microscopy
  • ELISA
  • Antigen expression and purification
  • Bovine T-cell and B-cell co-culture experiments

The researcher may also have opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.

For students planning a future PhD in immunology, molecular biology, veterinary science or vaccine research, this practical laboratory experience could be an important addition to their academic profile.
