The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Net Zero Maritime Energy Solutions (N0MES) announces a fully funded 4-year PhD position for outstanding researchers.

They are seeking candidates to tackle key challenges in maritime energy, including:

  • Generating energy from renewable sources like offshore wind and tidal power.
  • Getting that energy from offshore to onshore areas, including ports.
  • Reducing environmental impacts of offshore energy.
  • Decommissioning old energy facilities.

The UK aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by using more renewable energy. By 2030, it plans to have 50 gigawatts of offshore wind power. But installing underwater cables for this is tricky, especially in different soil types.

Their project aims to find better ways to install these cables by studying how cutting tools interact with underwater soil.

They will:

  • Improve computer models to understand how tools and soil interact.
  • Test their models and ideas to make sure they work.
  • Find ways to make cable installation more efficient.
  • Share our findings with the industry.

About N0MES:
