Scholarship Benefits:

Funding Details for Bayer Foundation Fellowships:

  • The maximum funding for a single fellowship is €10,000.
  • Bayer Foundation Fellowships can be combined with any other funding or fellowship source to maximize support for your project.
  • Funding is applicable for activities lasting up to a maximum of six months.

Other Information:

  • Administrative Support Limitations:
    • Bayer Foundation cannot provide administrative support regarding arrangements for language courses, visas, administration, housing, or travel.
    • Applicants and/or host institutions are responsible for arranging and managing all related practical aspects independently.

Eligibility Criteria:

1) Purpose of Fellowship

Bayer Foundation Fellowships serve the purpose of enriching existing study programs (MSc, PhD, and medicine) by offering additional funding for international placements or research activities that complement ongoing or future scientific studies.

  • Students outside of Germany must undergo placements within Germany.
  • Students enrolled at a German university must pursue placements outside of Germany.
  • Fellowships are not applicable for placements at commercial organizations (i.e., in industry).

  • Otto Bayer Fellowships for Drug Discovery Sciences:

    • Applicants must currently be enrolled in an MSc or PhD (or equivalent) program in natural science, pharmacy, or data science.
    • Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.
  • Jeff Schell Fellowships for Agricultural Sciences:

    • Applicants must currently be enrolled in an MSc or PhD (or equivalent) program in natural science or data science.
    • Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.
  • Carl Duisberg Fellowships for Medical Sciences:

    • Applicants must be studying human or veterinary medicine or enrolled in an MSc or PhD (or equivalent) program in medical engineering, applied medical sciences, public health, or data science in medicine.
    • Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers in medical engineering, applied medical science, public health, and data science in medicine are not eligible.

Application Procedure:

Documents Needed

For completing the application, ensure you have the following key documents (in English):

  • Budget Proposal:

    • Include a detailed breakdown of all costs, covering items such as travel expenses, rent, exceptional costs, etc.
  • Letters of Recommendation:

    • Provide two letters of recommendation, including one from a current and/or previous direct supervisor at your home institute.
  • Host Institute Acceptance Letter:

    • Include a letter from the host institute confirming acceptance and expressing support for the applicant's placement.
  • Certificates for Completed Studies:

    • Submit certificates for any completed studies, including but not limited to a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or medical degree.
  • Transcripts:

    • Include transcripts containing exam marks and similar information for studies up to the current date.

Having these documents ready and in English will streamline the application process, ensuring you present a comprehensive and well-supported case for your Bayer Foundation Fellowship application.

Application Procedure

  • All applications must be in English.
  • Ensure all documents are uploaded in English (refer to page 6 for details).
  • Utilize the online application portal for submission; applications via email or letter will not be considered.
  • Incomplete, incorrect, or out-of-scope applications will not be considered.
  • Applicants should submit only one application per call to avoid rejection of all submissions.

Important note:

  • If your application is suitable for both Otto Bayer Fellowships for Drug Discovery Sciences and Jeff Schell Fellowships in Agriculture Sciences, e.g., synthetic chemistry, choose "Otto Bayer & Jeff Schell" in the application form for consideration in both categories.

Evaluation Process and Criteria

  • Initial screening by the Bayer Foundation to ensure completeness and fulfillment of application criteria.
  • Independent jury evaluation based on criteria such as fundamental quality, relevance, applicant motivation and potential.
  • Additional criteria include the desirability of collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals.

Important Dates for Application and Fellowships

  • Submission period: February 12th, 2024, to April 8th, 2024 (portal closes on April 9th).
  • Notification of fellowship outcome: June 24th, 2024.
  • Funds transferred for contracts completed by July 5th, 2024 (transferred on July 22nd, 2024).
  • All remaining funds transferred by August 14th, 2024.
  • Fellowships to commence between July 22nd, 2024, and June 30th, 2025.
