Scholarship Description:

The British Council Scotland SGSAH EARTH Scholarships initiative, funded by the British Council and administered by SGSAH (Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities), aims to facilitate global research partnerships between PhD and Early Career Researchers and Scottish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), academic mentors, and external organizations. Focusing on the realm of environmental arts and humanities and their cross-disciplinary intersections, the program strives to underscore the vital role of these fields in addressing the climate emergency and their potential for interdisciplinary research within the framework of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) contexts. By fostering international mobility and research opportunities, the program seeks to cultivate novel strategies to combat the pressing global challenge of the climate crisis while fostering sustainable research and cultural exchanges within the arts, humanities, and cultural sectors.

The program's foundational principles align with SGSAH's commitment to internationalization, are in line with its GREEN/GRADUATE Strategy and Operational Plan, and echo the British Council's Climate Connections legacy initiative. Organized around SGSAH's strategic themes of Environmental Humanities and Creative Industries/Economies, with a specific emphasis on climate emergency issues, the impact of the arts and cultural sector, and the legacy of COP26 (Glasgow, 2021), the program aims to amplify collaborations between Scottish and international HEIs. This initiative builds upon SGSAH's existing Global Connects programs and the SFC Saltire Emerging Researcher scheme.

The program extends scholarships to non-UK-based PhD and Early Career Researchers, inviting them to Scotland for in-person and hybrid exchanges lasting up to three months in 2024, focusing on the domain of environmental arts and humanities. Core to the placements is a two-week cohort-building core leadership program scheduled for April 2024, providing an opportunity for all recipients to connect and collaborate with Scotland-based scholars. These efforts are complemented by thematically and geographically oriented Clusters, enriching the overall research experience.

Scholarship Benefits:

The British Council Scotland SGSAH Earth Scholarships 2024 offer funding in the form of scholarships for PhD and early career researchers (ECRs) from non-UK universities. The specific details of the funding include:

1. Scholarship Coverage: The program provides financial support for selected scholars to come to Scotland for research collaborations. The funding covers various aspects of the research experience.

2. Stipend: Scholars receive a stipend to support their living expenses during their stay in Scotland.

3. Project Budget: In addition to the stipend, scholars are provided with a project budget. This budget encompasses various expenses related to the research project, such as travel costs, visa fees, part-time research assistance, conference fees, and health insurance.

4. Cohort-building Core Leadership Program: The program includes a two-week cohort-building core leadership program where all recipients come together with Scotland-based scholars. This program aims to facilitate networking, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas.

The funding aims to enable scholars to undertake in-person and hybrid exchanges for up to three months in 2024, focusing on environmental arts and humanities research. It allows scholars to fully engage in their research, collaborate with mentors and peers, and make the most of their research experience in Scotland.

Eligible Nationalities:

This scholarship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria:

• The program targets PhD and early career researchers (ECRs) who are either currently enrolled or have graduated from a non-UK university. These individuals should be engaged in the environmental arts and humanities field and are offered the opportunity to collaborate in Scotland, connecting with academic mentors and leveraging the resources of a host Higher Education Institute (HEI) in 2024.

• Eligible applicants need to be either currently pursuing a PhD or have obtained a PhD qualification. These degrees should fall broadly within the subject areas of Arts & Humanities, as defined by the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council). Proposed research must also align with Arts & Humanities subject categories. In cases of interdisciplinary PhD projects, a minimum of 50% of the project's scope should pertain to Arts & Humanities disciplines. Additionally, the program strongly encourages research proposals that embrace interdisciplinary approaches extending beyond the realm of Arts & Humanities.

The application is made through SGSAH’s online system which can be accessed here. The Guidelines include details of the information you will be required to complete online, as well as the assessment criteria for the scheme.

For this deadline, you must submit:

• A full research proposal; and details of how you will benefit from Cluster membership, cohort-building, training and development activities
• A budget and justification of resources
• A CV (up to 4pp)
• A letter of support from your PhD supervisor (up to 2pp)
• A letter of support from the proposed Host Institution (Head of Department or equivalent) (up to 2pp)

Late applications will only be considered where there is evidenced breakdown in SGSAH's operational systems and where such system failures have made submission by the deadline impossible. Please note that SGSAH will not accept late applications where there has been a systems failure at the applicant's end (e.g failure of internet connection). For this reason, we strongly advise applicants to complete the application process at least 48 hours in advance of the deadline.
