Overview

The BA (Hons) History and American Studies program at Northumbria University offers an in-depth exploration of historical evidence, enabling students to understand contemporary issues within the context of the United States and beyond. What you'll study

Year 1 (Foundations): Students will establish essential skills in historical research and analysis while being introduced to key themes in American Studies and pivotal historical periods.

• Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe 1200–1720

Year 2 (Developing Specialisms): This year focuses on a deeper understanding of historical change, examining how power, ideology, and culture influence societies.

• Cultures, Empires and Ideas: Global Histories of Power and Ideology

Year 3 (Independent Research): Students will engage in advanced studies and complete an extensive dissertation on a topic of their choosing, with guidance from academic supervisors.

• Dissertation (Year 3): An in-depth research project based on a selected area of interest.

Optional Opportunities: Students may have the chance to undertake a placement year with an industry or cultural partner or participate in study abroad programs in Europe or North America, subject to program regulations and availability.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically required to have 120 UCAS Tariff points from acceptable Level 3 qualifications, such as A-levels, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE, or the International Baccalaureate.
