Overview

The Applied Ethics – Environmental Ethics program at Stellenbosch University is a postgraduate course designed to explore the ethical dimensions of environmental issues and policy discussions. Students engage in advanced coursework and undertake a thesis that hones their research skills within the realm of environmental ethics.

What you'll study

The curriculum integrates advanced applied ethics modules with a focus on a research thesis. Students will follow a structured program and complete a thesis on an approved research topic in environmental ethics.

• Environmental Ethics (core module)
• Applied Ethics Research and Methods (supports thesis development)
• Electives / Additional Applied Ethics Modules (may include business ethics, biomedical ethics, or social and political ethics, subject to availability and individual study plans)
• Thesis (accounts for 50% of the final assessment)

Contact sessions: Students must attend two intensive contact sessions at the beginning of each semester. After these sessions, independent study and thesis work continue.

Entry requirements

Admission to the program requires an appropriate postgraduate qualification along with prior training in philosophy and/or ethics. The department may consider applicants who do not possess the specific Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Ethics, as long as they can demonstrate sufficient training in philosophy and/or ethics.
