What you'll study

The PhD program spans across six terms, integrating both theoretical and practical learning experiences. Students will begin their journey at UCD, where they will complete initial taught modules before transitioning to research stays at partner institutions. This blend of study and research allows for a comprehensive understanding of global human development challenges.

  • Term 1: Commence studies at UCD. It is advisable for students to earn 15–20 credits of taught modules during this term.
  • Term 2: Engage in a research stay at a partner institution, working under local supervision and earning research credits.
  • Term 3: Return to UCD to complete remaining taught credits, accumulating a total of 30 credits by the end of this term. Preparation for the transfer assessment will also take place during this period.
  • Terms 4–5: Continue research at the partner institution, developing the dissertation with close guidance from supervisors.
  • Term 6: Finalize and submit the dissertation at UCD.

Assessment milestones throughout the program include a formal transfer assessment in Term 3, followed by dissertation submission and final doctoral evaluation in accordance with UCD regulations.

  • Applicants should possess a Master’s degree (MA or M.Sc.).
  • A minimum overall grade of 2.1 (or equivalent) is required.
