The Master of Environment and Sustainability (MES) at the University of Toronto is a full-time, one-year research-stream program designed to equip students with the transdisciplinary skills necessary to address pressing environmental and human well-being challenges. Through collaboration with faculty and, when applicable, external partners, students develop decision-making and research methodologies vital for effective solutions.
Courses and research training
During the program, students will complete a structured set of graduate-level courses, gaining essential knowledge in sustainability, environmental health, and applied policy and management. As a research-stream MES, students will also engage in a research component that culminates in a graduate research output, such as a thesis or equivalent project. Course topics are tailored to foster transdisciplinary problem-solving, focusing on real-world environmental challenges and evidence-based decision-making.
To be eligible for the MES program, applicants must possess an appropriate honours bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, ideally including a minor in environment, sustainability, or a related field.
GRE/GMAT requirements are not specified for this program.
Graduates of the MES program will be well-prepared to pursue diverse career paths in environmental policy, sustainability consulting, resource management, and public health sectors. The program's focus on research and practical application ensures that students develop the skills needed to make impactful contributions to environmental and sustainability initiatives. Additionally, upon completion, graduates may be eligible to apply for a post-study work permit in Canada, allowing them to gain valuable work experience in their field.
